Speed Development in Youth Football – A Few Qucik Tips For Developing Speed
Speed development
For the second year in a row my youth football program is doing an abbreviated “football speed” development program in the Spring. The program is designed to develop enthusiasm for the game in our program while working on developing fitness and ‘soccer speed’.
The program is called FASTT for Fun, Agility, Speed and Technique Training. The program is divided into three sections, the first section is the “soccer speed” development section. We work on developing form, speed and quickness here using modern plyometric movements integrated into soccer movements. In this part of the program we use a combination of body weight, ladder, cone, medicine ball, box jumps and harness.
Development of Fundamental Skills
The second section focuses on the basic development of basic soccer techniques. We don’t use pads for this. We focus on breaking down each fundamental soccer move into teachable steps and then perfecting those steps. We don’t work on our plans or football plays, this is all fundamental skill development and the drills and skills change daily.
Game time
The last section is the part of purely fun team games. Many of these team games have little to do with football. What they do for kids is help them bond with each other and help them develop a strong sense of competition while having fun.
This is not regulatory, this is a process that helps build momentum and excitement in our youth football program. It also shows players and parents how we work with children and gives children an understanding of our expectations and communication methods. This definitely helps us in August, when many teams struggle with their first practices, we are able to move quickly through evaluations, teach fundamentals and put programs in place.
Future Teams
As I may have mentioned before, we are expanding our program into 4 age groups
6-7 flag team, 7-9 year old tackle team, 10-11 year old tackle and 12-13 year old tackle. I will be head coach of all 3 tackle teams next season after 2 of the teams last year. The reason I have all 3 teams is because the parents want it that way and I have 3 coaches that I want to work side by side with me for a season before I hand them a team. While several of these future coaches have excellent credentials, there is much more to youth football than the X’s and O’s.
Omaha when I expanded from 1 team to 16 teams in 5 short years, we didn’t take the time to do our hands on apprenticeship program and outgrew our infrastructure. We now have a Head Coach Development Program that will prepare you to be an effective youth football coach.
FAST summer
The FASST program lasts 7 weeks and started on April 1st, we meet once a week for just 90 minutes. We want to keep kids very hungry for contact with us and a lot of them play baseball as well. We leave each player with a written summer development plan that they can use if they choose. We show parents what we are looking for in the movements at a group presentation in May and leave them with a written training plan. I let the parents know that I don’t care if Junior pulls any of the moves in the summer, but to let kids be kids and make sure they spend plenty of time outside in the heat. On the other hand, we have some kids who are really hard-nosed, and if they want to do something on their own in the summer, we give them the tools to do it.
Doing a Speed Camp or an activity like FASST has helped set us apart from other Youth Soccer programs in the area and gives us a nice segue into the fall. Our league rules do not restrict this type of activity in any way, please be sure and check the league rules before you start.
