Should Women Hire a Male or Female Trainer and 17 Things to Consider

Jessica is a 38-year-old, out-of-shape woman who has never worked out before. She is not overweight, but weak and lethargic and feels out of shape. She says her clothes don’t fit like they used to and she needs to lose some weight and tone and shape her body to feel better about herself. He is thinking of hiring a trainer.

Jessica walks into a health center a few days ago and asks her health center counselor about trainers. He collects business cards of all the trainers, then goes to the health association website and reads the credentials for each trainer. Jessica narrowed it down to three coaches.

The next day he walks into the club asking for the advice of all the coaches. He has taken free advice from three trainers and narrowed it down to two. A female coach and a male coach, they both like him, but he’s having trouble deciding who to hire.

The male trainer has trained more clients in his five years of training. He tells Jessica that 90% of his customers are women, but in this industry most customers will always be women.

The female coach has almost the same credentials but specializes in athletes. Most of her clients are men, basketball players, football players, bodybuilders and other athletes.

The Female Educator

Personally, I’d say the female coach has more experience, and a more formidable coach in many ways. Coaching athletes gives her a knowledge base that I believe is unmatched by most coaches. But, he might be overqualified to train Jessica. Her in-depth knowledge is not needed at such a low fitness level of a beginner like Jessica who has never worked before.

The approach of female coaches can be a bit stricter than that of male coaches. Why; Athletes require a higher level of concentration, dedication and harder training than the average person.

Athletes get in shape to compete to be out of shape. Most athletes are not balanced in their approach, NOR SHOULD THEY BE. They want to achieve their goals and will do whatever it takes to perform at the highest level possible in their sport.

Now don’t get me wrong, the female trainer is smart enough to know that she should tone down Jessica’s training to accommodate her needs and wants, but she may not have the level of empathy and patience that the male trainer needs to train a low fitness client.

She can expect more than Jessica can pull off at the start of her fitness quest. The female trainer may not be able to match Jessica’s level of focus and commitment that she is accustomed to when training more athletic clients. He can give her a more dynamic training program. can give her a diet plan that will be a little bland and strict etc. That doesn’t mean it’s bad. I personally think most clients should seek out this type of instructor. A coach not a cheer leader!

The male coach

The male trainer on the other hand is not weak. He is experienced and familiar with almost every person who goes to the gym. He has worked and spent hundreds of hours reading, researching, and implementing programs that help clients meet their daily fitness needs, such as weight loss, shaping and toning, and improving overall health.

The male coach can demonstrate the greater patience required to help a client discover behaviors that will lead to improved fitness with a more balanced lifestyle. The male trainer uses the attitudes, mental, spiritual and emotional states of men and women who JUST want to improve their physical condition.

That’s not to say that the female trainer isn’t capable of having some of the traits to train Jessica, but her mind could be that of an athlete, which could be overwhelming at first.

Does it really matter Male or Female Coach

There are physical differences between men and women that will affect the approach to getting a person in shape. I will delve into this in the future, but below are just some of the physical differences.

1) Women tend to be weaker in the upper body than men

2) Women have more body fat than men

3) Women’s pelvises tilt more than men’s

4) Women have less muscle mass than men

5) Women are more flexible than men

Really, it doesn’t matter, it’s just a matter of a male being trained in these differences.

When deciding whether to hire a coach, male or female, it all depends on your needs, what you’re trying to achieve, and how well you’ll get along with the person you’re considering hiring.

The male trainer seems like a better fit for Jessica based on what she has to bring to the table, just by interacting with clients like Jessica on a daily basis.

Questions to ask a potential trainer

It doesn’t matter the gender of the coach, but you need to ask questions and feel comfortable with the person you want to hire and have a game plan. Your ultimate goal is to find the right match for you, your personality and your lifestyle.

Here are questions I think are important.

1) How many years has the instructor been practicing alone?? I say they should have at least 5 years or personal fitness training. You want someone who is in the trenches.

2) How long have they been trainers?: At least 2 years, but I prefer 5 years or more. This is important the more clients a trainer has trained the more experienced they are.

3) How many clients are they currently training?: Summarizes to experience the most clients a trainer has now, tells you about their popularity and how well they get along with others. Usually great coaches have a personality that draws people to them. This person is fun to be around but motivating and has a great coaching style at the same time.

4) How many clients have they trained since they have been trainers:?I would say they must have trained at least 20 new clients a year. If they’ve been in the industry for more than 5 years, they should have trained at least 100. If you were going to do heart surgery, would you want the doctor who has 20 surgeries under his belt or 10. Well, that’s not good. Experience counts!

5) Are they certified?: Most people make a big deal about this, but I don’t! Why; Remember that the goal of getting certified is like any other exam. It’s to pass the test! Pay more attention to the number of courses an instructor has taken. There is something to be said for someone who is willing to constantly learn. Ask the instructor what other courses they have available. The more diverse a coach is, the more valuable he is to your fitness. Education comes from experience and continuing education. Taking continuing education classes, teaching college continuing education classes to the public, creating other programs like starter classes, and teaching activities like kickboxing make for a more knowledgeable and fun instructor. That being said, when a person receives a certification that usually shows their commitment to the industry meeting this minimum standard. If they are not certified, show a lack of commitment to their customers and the industry, you should look elsewhere.

6) How long certified or with a degree?: At least 2 years. See above and observe the first 5 listed on the page to make a decision.

7) How long do they keep their clients?: If people keep this trainer for at least a year paying them hundreds a month, there must be a good reason!

8) Will they give you a fitness assessment how will they get you to your fitness destination?: One of the most vital questions. This is by far one of the most satisfying questions. When you are sick and you go to the doctor, you expect him to ask questions, look at your body, and assess your current state of health. Of course yes. Then why would you expect to start an exercise program without first assessing your current fitness level? Assessing your fitness level is the surest way to personal success. What does the assessment specifically achieve? It lets you know exactly where to start with your fitness program instead of shooting in the dark. It eliminates trial and error, enabling you to set goals that are easy to track and achieve results that you can see on your body and on paper. If your coach doesn’t do strength, cardio, body fat, weigh-in and measurement and a simple nutrition analysis and that’s the bare minimum, don’t hire him. They are lazy and don’t give you everything there. End of conversation!

9) Do they have clients who will talk to you?: If you sense their reluctance to give you clients to talk to, think twice about hiring them. If they are more than happy and even better, they will refer you to a client who is already in the gym on site, that is a good sign.

12) What kind of progress are you making?

13) Is he on time for sessions most of the time?

14) Have you heard negative things about the coach?

15) What is their personality like?

16) Before you hire someone go to the gym and watch how they react to their clients. If they have a studio, he arrives early and observes their interaction with other customers.

17) Finally – The Sixth Sense. When you work with someone once or more times a week, you will develop a friendly relationship. You will talk about your work and personal life. Hopefully they will listen and not give their input. If you feel like you might not get along with the coach, don’t waste your time or money. If the instructor is blatantly flirtatious or makes sexual comments, avoid them like the plague. If you feel sexual tension, avoid it by all means RUN. Nothing good comes of this!

Your goal is to get in shape as stress-free as possible. If there is any stress in the trainer-client relationship, it will end badly. Anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, try to interview more instructors. Use your intuition!
