Orphans and Their Life

A child is like raw clay, whatever shape we give it will be molded accordingly. The child is the most real and innocent being, he should be treated with great love and respect, he has the right to receive a good education, the opportunity in society to develop as a good citizen. They need protection from family to build confidence to face the world and care to nurture their childhood. Unfortunately there are millions of children who live without any support, care and shelter. They are deprived of family and education and forced to live in inhumane conditions. Such helpless children are known as orphans. An orphan is a person who has lost their parents and is therefore left alone with no one there to take care of them.

Orphans whose parents have died are thrown out of their homes and left alone on the street. Dubai is an international city in the UAE, it is a famous tourist destination in the world. It is known as a shopping paradise and people come with their children to enjoy their holidays. Unfortunately it has many orphans who are left alone looking for help and hope. In Dubai orphans are treated as a social responsibility of the kingdom. They are first sent to the children’s hospital for first aid and basic medical care. The child is then brought into the ward. Thus the state hospital takes full responsibility for the child’s development.

They are kept there and treated well. They receive all basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. There is well designed adoption process where these orphans can be adopted by citizens. Volunteers are allowed to visit the hospital so that the development of the orphaned children can have exposure to the outside world. There is a very touching story about Annie’s Girl which is about a child who entered an orphanage and how she survived and found out about her family and life before the orphanage and life after it.

This story describes the intricacies of how children are treated in orphanages and how they become and what happened to them. This tells how the child remembers being taken to the orphanage when he was about three years old unable to think about what is happening and what will happen in the future. He suffers not only from physical but also mental injuries. As she encounters various ugly and inhuman incidents that leave a permanent mark on her memories and trouble her throughout her life. This book tells the truth about the inhumane conditions in which orphanages operate and how they make weak and insecure adults.

Education is very important for every child and it is a birth right. There are many human rights agencies and organizations working for the welfare of these orphaned children. It is very important to let them know how education can bring fresh breath to their life. It is very important to take steps to ensure that these children receive proper education in a healthy atmosphere. They should be given equal opportunities to study with regular students and become one with the open society.

There are NGOs that try to give them equal opportunities, they help these children by enrolling them in schools, giving them books, uniform, etc. This makes them feel supported and they can also grow up and become respected members of the family. It is very important to make these children aware of their human rights and to be able to speak up whenever something unpleasant happens. They should also be well protected by law. Their awareness of human rights empowers them to fight against any atrocities and inhuman acts. These NGOs take care to protect the rights.

These orphaned children need a home and a family and that is why there are NGOs and local agencies that help find a home for these children. In Dubai, adoption of such orphans is reserved. The authorities allow citizens to adopt these abandoned children. According to Islam, the holy prophet Muhammad said that “the house which welcomes the orphans and where they are treated with love and affection is considered the best house of all. which is regarded as the worst house’. The State of Dubai encourages people to adopt God’s child and give them hope and a family. However, the state prohibits any other national from adopting its child irrespective of caste, creed and social status. Once a child is left on the street and abandoned, it becomes the responsibility of the state department and only nationals and citizens can adopt these children. However, this law restricted many expatriates living in Dubai who were willing to adopt a child there. However, this law encouraged locals to come forward to make them part of their family. The world has become well aware and welcomes them with an open heart.

It is reported that the state ward has never had more than 12 godchildren, including girls and boys. Couples seek adoption when they cannot conceive. And there are cases where people feel responsibility towards these innocent children and want to give them a family. To adopt, they must submit a written request to the General Manager explaining their situation and the reason they wish to adopt a foster child. Such couples are allowed to visit the ward where they can interact with the children. So when their application is approved, they already know which child they will be taking home.

The state investigates the family situation and the environment. A full report on the family and its background and reasons for adoption is complied and submitted to the Director General for his kind consideration. Recommendations are given by a social worker who thoroughly studies each case and then recommends them. This is a time-consuming process and can take 2-3 months. However, the process does not end there, with social workers continuing to follow up for several years after the legal adoption process is completed. The Director General of Dubai’s Department of Health and Medical Services enthusiastically praised this program and described it as “very successful”. Many such orphans are already married and happy in their lives.

There is a well-established mechanism in Dubai to assist children in orphanages. The state takes full responsibility of such deprived children and has set up Ward 16 at Al Wasl Hospital. The hospital authority takes care of these children. The authorized person said that the children are taken to the hospital and their health and condition are checked and then they are admitted to pediatric wards and the authorities try to find out about their real parents if they are not found such children are admitted to ward 16 and become a ward of state.

All over the world people are working for the welfare of orphans. The North London Gas Alliance in London works to improve the lives of such children. Great efforts are being made by countries such as Europe, Africa, USA, Asia and Russia. Mother Teresa’s great efforts resulted in changing the lives of millions of children. As he rightly said that “Let nothing trouble you, let nothing make you afraid. All things pass: God does not change. Patience accomplishes all things; whoever has God never lacks anything.”

In order to bring changes to these deprived children we all act together, the government should make permanent arrangements to create a healthy environment and give them equal opportunities. It is important to educate children who have parents that these orphans also need their help and support, not sympathy.

I have researched that there are NGOs and social organizations play a bigger role than government agencies, so government agencies should increase their active participation. Also awareness had to be spread so that the society would accept them and give them respect and love. Education should be available and they should be encouraged to study well and become responsible citizens.
