A Eureka Tent Was My 7 Year Old’s Favorite Birthday Present

My son just turned 7 this week. Surprisingly his favorite birthday present was a Eureka tent. We signed him as a scout a few months ago. My wife and I agree that scouting is a good life experience for our boy. Which is good because otherwise I’d have to sneak him out to meetings. My son, Jan, is a bit of a ham. He loves attention and will get it any way he can. When I started taking him out fishing or hiking, he would act scared. I think he was just doing it to get attention, because in other situations he seems pretty fearless. Like running through the woods in the dark… I’ll finish this story later in a minute. So my son was very excited to become a scout. At his age, scouting is about having fun and getting kids to learn something without them realizing it and getting away with covering their ears.

For Jan’s 7th birthday, his grandmother went online to the scout store and bought him a Class A outfit and other scout gear, including the BSA 75th Anniversary Akela Eureka 2 Person Tent, which is no longer available. Jan’s mother and I got him… toys. We thought we’d have him open grandma’s presents first, thinking he’d like them but want toys, so we saved the remote control and video game and transformers for last. Well, we should have done it the other way around, who knew. After opening everything, the first thing he wanted to do was set up the stage.

So we went back and started unpacking it. Of course Jan wanted to do it all, even if he didn’t know what he was doing. Gotta give it to him though, after a few minutes he figured most of it out. He wasn’t strong enough to bend the posts to put the pins in, but I was there to help him with it. Once I put the pins in the poles, he started cutting the sides of the tent into the poles. I have to tell you that the quick clips, shock string poles and ring / pole features are really great. They make setting up and tearing down a breeze. I was really surprised once we got it set up. The thing is huge for a 7 year old. I’m sure she’ll keep it clear to him until he’s a full BoyScout, especially since he was made by Eureka. Most of you probably already know that a 2 person tent only comfortably fits 1 person because you need room for your gear. Well, Jan certainly had plenty of room. The dogs liked it too.

The next day I had to rush home from work at the end of the day because Jan’s scout troop had planned a camping trip to Starkey Park. By the way, Starkey Park is a great campground. Located in New Port Richey, Florida, approximately 45 minutes from Tampa Bay. It’s a good thing Jan and I familiarized ourselves with the scene the night before, because by the time we got there it was getting dark. Setting up camp wasn’t too difficult, even though the light was scarce. When the troop leader stopped by to say hello, he noticed we had two tents and looked a little confused. He thought it was really strange that Yan would sleep alone. I just told him that Jan was very independent and didn’t want to share his new tent. After that we started building a fire, which didn’t take long. Jan decided he wanted to move his tent a few feet away from the fire and before I could say anything, he pulled out the stakes and moved the whole thing back. I couldn’t do that with my old pop scene. This feature ring and pin/pole is very nice.

This is where my son gets his first black eye. It’s that special moment in a boy’s life when he realizes that getting hurt isn’t as bad as being afraid of getting hurt. Jan saw his best friend two campsites away from us and ran after him, completely ignoring my calls. You’d think it would be common sense not to run in the woods in the dark (unless you’re being chased by a madman with a knife), unfortunately common sense isn’t so common with kids. Yan tripped over a log and fell into a tree stump. It caught him just below his left eye. Half an inch taller and his nickname, ‘Pirate John’ would have had some real weight to it. Yan stood up holding his eye, which made me start to freak out a little. Fortunately it was nowhere near as bad as my overactive fatherly imagination had first thought. I was relieved to see that his eye was still very much intact, but I knew right away that he was going to get a glow.

Jan took it like a man, I couldn’t believe it. He didn’t cry or anything, he just took a stand because he was ashamed of falling. After Jan reluctantly let me see his wound, he went into his tent and zipped the doors and windows shut. He thought the other boys would make fun of him. One of the den mothers brought us over some ice to reduce the swelling. We gave Jan the ice and talked him off stage with the prospect of roasting marshmallows. To Jan’s surprise, and mine, all the other boys thought Jan was the toughest scout there because of his lack of tears. and even some of the older boys admitted they would have cried.

The next morning before breakfast at the pavilion, Jan and I packed up. We ate and did some activities and played baseball with the other scouts. I struggled a bit with him when it was time to go, until I told him we had to go to another birthday party (big families are the best). After we got home, I told Jan that we needed to clean out all the camping gear. I had to listen to some moaning and groaning about this until I told him he was responsible for setting up his tent to dry. Jan’s birthday scene made for a fun weekend to remember.

I started writing this article to recommend the Akela Eureka Tent for BSA’s 75th Anniversary, but, before I could finish it, I realized that it is no longer available. I can, however, recommend a matching Eureka tent that would suit a scout or scout. The Eureka Apex 2 – 3 Season tent is almost identical to the Akela Eureka tent. Both are approximately 36 square feet, ring and pin/pole arrangement, and string posts. They also weigh about the same, just over 5 pounds. And you can count on a Eureka scene to last.
