I’ve always loved making gadgets and gizmos that have some function, whether useful or not so useful. He started with the simple things that many children make – slingshots, a simple bow and arrow, a toy boat. Occasionally I made more involved objects like a canoe and a sand dune. Then there was the grass hut – 12 feet long, octagonal in shape and thatched from top to bottom with a thick layer of grass. I built it in a remote location, near a mouth full of water. He hauled the cut grass in a 1972 Volkswagon convertible with the top down. He piled the grass high on the back seat. It must have taken a dozen trips back and forth from a nearby hay field.

Simple things attract me more than expensive household items. A small project allows me to pursue an interest without interfering with other goals. A project with little time invested is more like entertainment. Time spent sincerely creating something designed and built with your own ingenuity can be quite enjoyable.

So now, when I’m not motivated to do more practical things, I often turn to an idea for some device or other that I’ve wanted to try to build but never got around to. I can recall many such improvised devices which gave me satisfaction and enjoyment.

Ideas for things to make come from many places. Most of the time the idea comes from a need. I do a lot of typing using a computer keyboard. I tend to keep the room temperature a little cool, cool enough that my hands get uncomfortable. I ended up cutting electrical heating tape wrapped into a large coil shape to surround the keyboard. Tying the heat tape to a large piece of cardboard keeps it in place. It does a nice job of keeping my hands warm. I can leave the room temperature where I want it. As far as I know, you can’t buy something like that.

Making and inventing improves my understanding of mechanical devices and materials. It becomes easier to manipulate and modify the physical things that are so much a part of everyday life. With effort and imagination, new devices can often be made or existing ones improved for my enjoyment and satisfaction.

Both intuition and logic are used to build a homemade gizmo. The more the two abilities are used together, the more powerful the combination becomes. A strong cooperation of reason and creativity helps a person to produce and enjoy life.

It’s fun and rewarding to create and build simple devices. These crafted items are valued more than more randomly acquired, purchased items. And it’s nice to prove that imagination and ingenuity can make life better.

The process of invention seems magical. The mind combines what has already made some sense into something new. It seems that even the darkest result can be produced after all. The grass hut and keyboard heater each gave me a little taste of that magic.
