Baby Sleep Problems – Getting Baby to Sleep Through the Night

It is a very common problem when babies have trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night. Hopefully, this article will help new parents find a solution to this serious problem that affects entire families.

As a mother of three adorable children (one of whom is still a toddler), I know how difficult it is for new parents to deal with sleep issues. All my children, as babies, had trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night. After many sleepless nights my husband and I were depressed, exhausted and constantly sleep deprived. Our friends’ babies were already sleeping through the night, but not my first-born daughter. Trying to find a solution I read many books, looking for answers. I found many proven behaviors and time-tested techniques that worked well with my babies. Here are some of them:

  • You should not force a baby to sleep. Sleep should be a pleasant state and safe enough to stay in. Parents’ goal should be to help the baby develop a healthy attitude about sleep.
  • Try to avoid advice that recommends letting your baby ‘cry’, especially in the first six months. It can harm the development of a sense of trust between the baby and the parent.
  • Stay flexible, because no technique works for all babies all the time. If certain techniques don’t work for your family, skip them. Every baby has a different temperament at night. What doesn’t work one week may work the next. That’s why it’s so important to follow your heart. In the end you will find the best solution.
  • Breastfed babies need to eat more often than bottle-fed babies, usually every two to three hours. This prevents them from sleeping soundly through the night until they are three to seven months old.

You can try the following sleep aids that worked for my kids:

  1. Maintain the correct bedroom temperature and humidity. Best is about 69 F and 50% humidity. Dry air can cause stuffy noses and lead to increased incidences of allergies in babies. All these can disturb the baby’s sleep.
  2. When you put the baby to sleep you create darkness in a bedroom. Try not to turn on the lights or TV while feeding her.
  3. It is very important to recreate a comfortable, cozy environment similar to that in the womb where the baby has spent nine months. So, if your baby seems uncomfortable in the crib, try using a bassinet, bassinet, or stroller to provide a snug fit. Cuddling or swaddling your baby can make him feel more comfortable, secure and prevent jerky movements that might wake him up. It is also helpful in calming some colicky babies.
  4. Try rocking your baby to sleep in a rocking chair. Walking with the infant and massaging him or patting his back while singing lullabies can be very soothing.
  5. Sometimes sleeping without background noise can be difficult because during the nine months babies are used to the sounds of the mother’s womb. So help your baby fall asleep by turning on a fan, an air conditioner, a vacuum cleaner or a music mobile that mimics the sounds of the womb like a white noise machine.
  6. Swinging can be helpful, especially with high-maintenance babies. A monotonous movement can induce more sleep than a familiar routine.
  7. Another good alternative is to ride in the car until the baby falls asleep. The cold night air and constant movements help the baby to calm down.
  8. For some babies it is useful to put them in a sling or in the trunk and wear them at home. Rocking will help your baby to calm down.
  9. It is very important to establish consistent bedtime routines. With familiar rituals, babies fall asleep more easily and sleep longer. For example, bedtime rituals with a warm bath, massage, rocking, feeding, singing, etc. they can teach him anticipation and help him fall asleep.

Pay close attention to medical causes of insomnia. If you try all these techniques and nothing works for you, you should be aware of different medical conditions that can affect sleep, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), breathing problems, or various allergies. Discuss this with your pediatrician to find the right solution. In conclusion, all of the above techniques will not only help your baby sleep but also create a healthy, positive attitude towards sleep that lasts a lifetime. Baby will learn that sleep is a pleasant state to enter and a safe state to remain. The right sleeping habits will make not only the baby but also the parents happy.
