It’s amazing how often medical opinions change. It seems that for every study that comes out in the medical field there is another study following closely behind that gives the opposite opinion or finding. Sure the media plays a role in this, but whenever I hear or read about a different study it seems to me that people should just use common sense.

We were discussing this recently at a family gathering. My niece was there with her four month old baby. He breastfeeds her and supplements with formula. My sister-in-law mentioned that when her son was that age, her doctor told her to start feeding him cereal. My other sister-in-law had her baby when the doctors suggested no solids for the first year. Each of us had received different advice about feeding our babies. We also laughed at how strict the doctors were about baby shoes. When my kids went there for their six-month checkup, the doctor suggested I take them in to be measured for baby shoes, in case they were starting to stand up. We were told that babies should wear the shoes for at least eight hours a day to ensure proper foot development. The baby shoes were leather with hard soles and reached above the ankle.

I remember taking my first child to a shoe store that specialized in baby shoes. His little feet were measured and he was fitted with high baby shoes. He hated wearing them. Every morning it was a struggle to put the little shoes on his feet. He was kicking and crying and trying to wiggle his foot out of the baby shoes before I could lace them up. It was a stressful way for both of us to start the day, but I thought it was so important to follow the doctor’s orders.

My niece said that in her baby book it says not to put hard soled shoes on babies until they can walk. They find that infants are more likely to try to take steps if they are barefoot. I’m sure the next generation will be told another theory. Especially with your first child you are so nervous about parenting. You want to do everything right. Now when I think about the struggle I went through and how upset I made my son, it makes me angry. To this day he doesn’t like wearing shoes.
