I Was Diagnosed With Metabolic Syndrome and Why I Started Eating Keto
I have been eating the medical way for a few years and considered myself a parasitologist, eating whole plant food and no dairy, meat, poultry or eggs.
6 weeks ago I decided to see a herbalist, Richard Whelan, I’ve wanted to see him for years but I think I wasn’t ready to face what he might say about my health. My goal was to alternately show my high blood pressure and I had not long been diagnosed with high cholesterol.
Well, I was in for a bit of a shock, he did several blood tests, pricking my finger and putting it through machines and looking at it under the microscope. Listening to my heart and taking my blood pressure.
He said he knew as soon as he saw me that I had metabolic syndrome, which is a combination of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and weight retention around your midsection that is so stubborn that no matter what you try, it won’t budge. And I had tried so hard, like exercising. Nothing changed those numbers.
He said it wasn’t a case of me getting diabetes, but when. He thought I was pre-diabetic.
I was speechless, I mumbled that I thought I was eating really well and healthy, that I liked refined sugar, but for the most part I wasn’t out of control.
So she gave me some herbs for my liver and some other vitamins and herbs to take, magnesium acetate, chromium, b complex, milk thistle and hawthorn and reishi
Then he said he wanted me to eat Keto.
I was like “Keto??????” what????
I was surprised, I said Keto is what threw my thyroid out 4 years ago, on low carb.
So he asked me what I was prepared to do, I said I was prepared to investigate. And he was glad about it.
Thyroid and Keto
So I started researching steadily for about a week. He had suggested I sign up for dietdoctor.com, which I did.
And I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why keto wouldn’t kick my thyroid back up like it had.
Then I had to find out why it happened.
I ate dirty keto. Which is basically eating only all fatty foods like sausage and bacon, meat and eggs, and none of the vegetables.
I spent quite a bit of time exploring vegan keto and decided that it would be too difficult.
So I brought in some meat, eggs, and other foods and threw out most of the things in my cupboards that were higher in carbs. It was very difficult to throw away my old foods that I thought were healthy.
What I’ve found though, is that these foods are healthy for some people, just like keto doesn’t work for everyone.
So I seemed to be doing pretty well for the first few weeks, I went into the keto flu stage as my body adjusted and then I was hit with diarrhea.
I went off all my vitamins and herbs. After 10 days I went back to my old way of eating to see if maybe it was the fat, maybe I had changed my diet too quickly instead of slowly adding foods.
I did a food tracker and was about to make an appt with my doctor when I came right.
So I’ve been fine for a week and this past weekend it started again. I dissected what I was eating and finally could figure out what was causing it because it would suck if it was fats.
It was sucralose. The sweetener that was in the powerade zero I used for electrolytes when I was feeling keto flu. This was a vicious cycle because I would think I would have to replace electrolytes because of the diarrhea and then drink more.
I haven’t weighed myself in a few weeks but I’ve started losing weight steadily and this morning I measured my waist and I have lost 15.5 cm in a month.
I really like eating keto. It’s very satisfying. I have introduced some dairy but not much. I eat mostly chicken, some meat and eggs. But this time I’m eating a lot more vegetables than last time.
I had a blood test a few weeks ago and my thyroid is within range and my liver results are all in range which I have not seen in 4 years of doing blood tests.
I’ll give you occasional updates on how I’m getting on.
Postscript: 5 months after starting keto I started having anxiety and went for a blood test. Sure enough, what I feared would happen, I am hyperthyroid in the early stages, I have upped my carbs and I have an appointment to see Richard in early February 2021. I have lost 12 lbs.
