Traveling Musicians – Here’s One of the Best Ways to Earn Money While on the Road

The biggest challenge for a struggling or unestablished musician is figuring out how to finance your travels to different venues.

You might do a show in Oklahoma City one weekend and have to be in Denver, Colorado a week later. Not only do you need to have a reliable vehicle, you also need to have money for gas and food and motels if you don’t want to sleep in the car or minivan. You don’t want to get a bad reputation for being scheduled and not showing up as promised.

Fuel while traveling can be an astronomical cost, which prevents many non-established musicians from building a following by playing venues around the country.

What can you do when your credit cards are maxed out and no one will lend you money?

Withdraw your own money while on the road and get paid in cash.

Flea markets and swap meets are a great way to do this.

I am a professional seller who makes thousands of dollars every month working only a few hours on the weekends, selling at flea markets and swap meets. I earn a full time income in less than 15 hours a week.

I’m also a singer/songwriter/musician on the side.

You can put cash in your pocket in two different ways:

1. Sell your own CDs. Play them on a boombox so others can try your music. Play with him for hints. Everyone enjoys the live music, including the other vendors around you. Just make sure to keep the volume at a reasonable level. The other suppliers must still be able to communicate with their customers.

2. Sell small light items such as jewelry, music CDs from other artists, DVD movies, etc. These can be purchased at low wholesale prices from wholesalers and importers, allowing you to mark up a little on the price to make a healthy profit, and they don’t take up much space in your vehicle.

Many vendors drive full-size cargo trucks and pull enclosed trailers, allowing them storage space for tables, chairs, merchandise, sun awnings, and other items needed to do business at flea markets and swap meets, festivals. bargains etc.

Many retirees live in RVs and sell at flea markets, allowing them to go north in the summer and south each winter. It’s a great way to enjoy life and couples can create a space for each person, doubling the money they can earn in a weekend.

If you have multiple members in your group, such as a guitarist, drummer, bassist, singer, sound tech, etc., each member of the group could set up in their own space selling different types of items. If everyone only has $150 a day in profit after expenses, the total profit they will earn could easily exceed $1,000 per weekend.

Cash. Accept personal checks and credit cards only if desired. Depends on you. (Many flea markets have an ATM machine in the office when shoppers don’t have cash.)

Flea market space rental is very affordable, starting at $5 per space per day. Average space rental is around $10 – $25 per day. Larger flea markets will bring in more than 20,000 shoppers each day, so the exposure can be quite good.

Arts and crafts festivals are also very popular with the “money” crowd and can run for four or five consecutive days. But renting space for the entire show can be a bit pricey, running up to $1,500 or more. Keep in mind that it can be worth your while as arts and crafts festivals can attract huge crowds of eager shoppers, often more than 100,000 people over the course of the week, greatly increasing your exposure.

I’ve seen everyone from classical and jazz violinists and guitarists to ten-piece steel drum bands playing and selling their CDs at arts and crafts festivals.

If you’re selling at a flea market in the same city where you’ll be performing that night, be sure to print out flyers or cards to hand out to everyone. After hearing you play at the Flea Market, that alone could mean a packed house for your set.

Selling your CDs at flea markets and festivals will also allow you to build your own mail order business. Always include an ad for your other CDs with every sale. It should have an order form they can fill out and mail (you can also get your own toll-free phone number to order).

Also, start building your own email list. Start collecting the names and email addresses of those interested in your music.

Once you have their email address, you will be able to stay in touch via email. Once or twice a month send them an email letting them know about your latest music, where you’ll be playing and tour dates, etc. It’s important to stay in touch so they remember your name. Who knows? One of them might know someone, who knows someone in the business, you know how that could go.

If you haven’t already, you should create an online presence. Create a fan site for you and your band, let people know more about you, the latest, where you are, where you’re going next, etc.

When you tour, be sure to visit those cities and towns where you previously sold CDs at flea markets or festivals. People will already know your music and want to hear more, especially live.

Consider developing a “circuit” of venues and flea markets. Just doing the circuit once a year can provide an incredible boost to your fan base and there’s nothing like returning to a crowd of fans who love and want to buy.

Flea markets and swap meets can really get you some much needed exposure, especially with the crowd that doesn’t usually hit clubs and coffee shops. It’s a method that most musicians completely overlook.

Tip: To make your space look nicer, bring a nice Persian style rug to spread out. Few sellers do this. It will make your space look much more appealing to the eye, draw attention to you and set your space apart from the crowd, potentially increasing your income and exposure.

You can make a very respectable income while traveling by selling at flea markets and bartering things as a sideline to your music career. I am a professional seller and most of the time I only sell at flea markets and swap meets.

I travel coast to coast, on the road 24/7/365 because I love the “life on the road”. I buy brand new merchandise from wholesale companies and sell it at flea markets, doubling and tripling my investment and paying cash too.

If you have something to sell, you can literally move across the country whenever you want, allowing you to build those bigger venues and build a solid music career.
