Momepreneur – Self Motivate And Plan Ahead

The female workforce constantly has to make choices between career and family. After investing so much financially and emotionally in their education and building their careers, motherhood can often complicate even the most well-laid plans. Whether she’s wracked with guilt while sitting in the boardroom when her child is in the care of a babysitter, or she fears she’s no longer able to focus on her work during those late-night meetings, it’s an enviable position for a mother to be in . Not to mention, she may face ridicule from critical colleagues and superiors who doubt her ability to cope with her home life and workload.

No matter how high paying your job is, it’s definitely not worth your skills and time if you have to deal with this kind of pressure, day in and day out. You run the risk of low self-esteem coupled with an unhappy work and home environment. Sometimes a little soul searching can help you realize that you really are worth a lot more than what you’ve been given credit for.

Jokingly, it is sometimes said that woman has a “built-in multi-tasking chip”. But jokes aside, this seems to make sense when you consider the expectations of a modern woman. I remember seeing a commercial for Mother’s Day. It features a 5-year-old trying to draw her family members. The child is drawing, the father is in his office, working, the brother is playing football and the sister is on the phone. But when it comes to drawing her mother, the little girl is so confused, she ends up drawing her mother with 8 arms, which I thought said a lot. We moms do so much without realizing it.

It’s time to think a little and tap into your skills and time to keep your priorities straight.

1. Your talent:-

  • Isn’t that why they hired you in the first place?

  • Do you still have the same spark, the love for what you do?

  • How closely do you follow developments in your field of expertise?

  • Does your job continue to use your talent or are you underutilized?

  • Your salary compensates for the long hours of work.?

2. Your time:-

  • Do you have to commute more than 2 hours to get to work? (That makes 4 hours per day and x gallons of gas per week. Do the math)

  • Does your commute mean you’re compromising your sleep? Without a decent 8 hours of sleep, you’re burning the candle at both ends.

  • Do you have at least 2 hours a day, just for yourself? And no multi-tasking… just for yourself. Sometimes even doing nothing is a great energy boost. If the answer to this is a resounding “NO,” that means you’re letting others (and yourself) abuse your time.

  • Do you bring your work home?

3. Your money, your plan

  • Do you have enough funds in the family account to last you at least 3-4 months if you decide to take a break from work?

  • Review the financial implications and complications again and again

  • Will you be able to get 6 uninterrupted hours a day working from home? This can be 3+3 or 2+2+2 or 6 consecutive hours.

  • Don’t overdo it and fall into the trap of thinking “I can work for 10 hours, I save commuting time”. You don’t take into account phone calls, unannounced visitors, vendors and other unexpected interruptions.

  • Do you have the resources to complement your talent and time? Like, uninterrupted internet connection, voice mail among others.

  • Do you have a “not to work beyond my 6 hours” determination? After all, what’s the point if you toil 10 hours a day. You can also work in the office.

4. Your Resources: – YOU CAN…

  • Spend 2 hours (out of 6 hours) finding potential clients who can use your skills online.

  • Plan the type of work you are willing to handle and prepare the documentation

  • Keep a log of your work activities from Day 1.

  • Keep personal and business mail / contacts separate.

  • Get a PayPal account (or look for other options) to receive money

  • Get in touch with sources that can provide you with a steady workflow without having to search for them yourself.

Motherhood is a wonderful thing. But that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your career goals. All it takes is a little preparation and a lot of persistence to achieve your goals on a personal and professional level. Your family has already adjusted to your current work schedule. You are not interrupted at work when you are in the office. So it will take some time for them to realize that when mom works from home, she actually works. A little family schedule adjustment will eventually give you at least your 6 hours of work.

You will now be a “work at home mom”, not on call. This means you take control of your time and make it truly yours. You should never feel guilty about doing things for the sake of your family and you should not sacrifice your ambitions either. It’s time to step back and consider the bigger picture. This will motivate you to take control and give you much needed perspective.
