Baby Sleep Mistakes Most Mom’s Make – Are You Making These 5 Mistakes?
Baby not sleeping well? Which of these 5 mistakes are you making?
(1) Make the room nice and dark and quiet when the baby sleeps during the day.
You may think this is a good idea in the hope that the child will sleep more so you can take a break. BUT, it’s really not useful in the long run – ie. Time to sleep. When your baby sleeps during the day, you have plenty of daylight in the house. Allow normal household and street noises to exist. The less time a child sleeps during the day can mean more sleep at night.
(2) Let your baby lie down in the crib or carrycot.
It’s tempting to let the child lie down so you can do other things. However, once again this is not in your best interest. The child should be active when awake. This could bring better sleep at night. Don’t you sleep better at night when you’ve been out running all day?
Find ways to introduce physical activity for the child. Play games, take the child on a fun outing to see new places and things. My little niece loves to people watch.
(3) Pick up your baby as soon as he starts crying at night.
Believe it or not, the child may not even be awake! I know I did it all the time with my kid. I didn’t know any better. I learned that if you rub the belly, the child can stop crying and go back to sleep.
(4) Play games that excite the baby.
When the whole family is home at night, they want to play with the child. This is fine as long as the activities are RELAXING for the child! Tell dad not to play airplanes or catch the kid in the air before bed. If you have other children, inform them not to excite the baby. It would be best to hold your baby and read. Clean the crib, ie take the toys out. Give the child a favorite toy to calm down.
(5) You don’t have a bedtime routine.
So one night you do everything in your room after the bath. The next night in the living room and the next night in the children’s room or even in the kitchen! This is not a good idea. Your baby needs to recognize when it’s time for bed – end of day – finito! So do your best to start the “ritual” at the same time every day and in the same room. Have a special night song, e.g. lullaby or music. Have a bedtime book to read.
Important note: DO NOT let your baby sleep on their stomach. It has been discovered that sleeping on the stomach can be the cause of SIDS!
