Home Remedies for Constipation in Adults
We’ve all experienced constipation at some point. Some reasons include stress, travel and temporary dehydration. Occasional constipation is no big deal, but chronic constipation can literally make you sick and cause many diseases.
Most of us understand that regular elimination is important. Bowel movement is one of the main ways to get rid of toxins from our body. Therefore, it is very important to have at least one bowel movement (BM) daily (if you have extensive amounts of daily BM, that is a whole new topic). Constipation is a symptom that can lead to many disorders and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, regular hemorrhoids, cancer, thyroid problems and skin disorders.
Before I discuss the five remedies, I’d like to say a quick word about eating the right foods. If you eat unhealthy foods with no nutrients or fiber, constipation problems will persist and natural remedies may not work. So address the problem with the foods you eat first as well as whether you drink 8 or more glasses of pure water daily.
If you have a healthy diet and still experience constipation on a regular basis, here are 5 things you can do:
Take a high-quality probiotic
A good quality probiotic has as many different strains (types) of bacteria as possible. Look on the label to get at least 4 strains and 7 or more strains are best. Most commercial inexpensive probiotics only have 1-2 different strains. The probiotic will help ensure an optimal balance in your gut flora.
Drink raw organic apple cider vinegar
I wrote an article about the benefits of raw apple cider vinegar. This will really help cleanse your system and has so many benefits beyond just getting rid of constipation. I suggest taking one tablespoon of ACV in 12-16 ounces of water and drinking it through a straw gradually as you do other things around the house. Drinking through a straw helps protect your tooth enamel.
Drink a high-quality aloe juice or gel
Similar to apple cider vinegar, aloe vera juice is a powerful healing liquid where the benefits go beyond constipation as it naturally reduces inflammation and heartburn. Aloe juice has vitamins and minerals that nourish your body. Quality is very important, so try to buy organic and read the ingredients to make sure it is free of preservatives and other chemicals.
Eat foods rich in fiber
This goes back to my point about healthy eating. Foods rich in fiber include brown rice and other “whole grains,” nuts, dried fruits such as prunes, legumes, and beans, and fresh greens, vegetables, and fruits. Healthy foods are usually high in fiber.
I am a big believer in herbs and their healing power. Sometimes drinking a warm chamomile tea before going to bed can give you a head start for a good bowel movement in the morning. “Tripala”, which means “three fruits”, is an Ayurvedic herb that detoxifies your body by cleansing the colon. It also cleanses the blood and is a liver detoxifier. You can buy Tripala in powder form (often referred to as “churna” in Hindi) or in capsule form. I recommend the powder form, but it tastes bitter, so if you have sensitive taste buds, the capsule form is fine. Another great combination of herbs is to make a cleansing herbal tea with licorice, dandelion, ginger and yellow dock.
First start by addressing your eating habits. Just making adjustments to it can make a huge difference. Then apply some of the above remedies and you will see your constipation problem disappear.
