Getting the Kids to Bed

If your kids don’t go to bed easily, it can color every aspect of family life — EVERYONE IS grumpy when they don’t get enough sleep!

Here are some quick tips to get the kids to bed — and make them stay there!

1. Wear them. I have a friend who raised twin boys, and her biggest piece of parenting advice was this: Every afternoon, rain or shine, take them on a “forced run.” The boys had to walk for about 30-45 minutes (depending on age). They moaned the whole time, but she stayed hard. Wearing them allowed her some free time while they slept. Translate it to your children. Take a family bike ride, play Wii, or do an exercise video as a group. They’ll sleep better — and so will you!

2. Get a routine. We’re bad at sticking to a schedule, I’ll admit it. With three kids of very different ages and with different activities, it’s hard to keep a schedule when one has basketball, one has classes, and one just wants to be with her big brothers. But as much as we can, we eat at the same time and try to put the kids to bed at the same time every night. Sometimes we do better than others, but having a goal keeps us motivated.

3. Lights out! The little ones don’t want to miss anything, so if there’s a lot of noise or lights, they’ll be up and down like the stock market. Keep things quiet and dark. If that means you have to do your own activities elsewhere in the house, do it. I often have to “close the house” before the kids go to bed, but it’s worth it.

4. Bribe them. Give some motivation! My husband told my little one that if she would sleep in her bed for two weeks straight, he would get her a puppy. It worked, but then we got stuck with the puppy — and getting up and picking him up to take him out while he was house training caused us more lost sleep than having our 4-year-old in bed with us! So maybe try bribing with smaller things like, oh, a STUFFED puppy.

5. Get up early. Move the family clock up. If you (and your kids) are early risers, you’ll be early to bed too. Now that I get up at 5am to go to the gym, I’m ready to hit the hay by 8:30. The kids are too, so we’re all delivering much earlier than we used to. The only problem? I can’t stay up later than them to enjoy the peace and quiet!
