Elimination Communication – Diaper Free

“Oh my… he’s so little – is he already potty trained?” People are fascinated that my son has never worn diapers. It’s a great conversation starter. Elimination communication, also known as Diaper Free, is a recent trend in America – especially in my hometown of Boulder, Colorado. It is even possible to attend meetings with a group of other like-minded mothers or those who want to learn to carry babies without extra padded bottoms. This very gentle, eco-friendly and natural way to deal with your baby’s waste is based on the theory that babies actually know their elimination processes – yes, even from birth – and are able to communicate it to you.

The day my son was born, I was caught peeing in a small bowl next to my bedside table. I immediately told him “pee-pee”. That would be the key word. Then he started going again and I placed him over the bowl and said my associated word “pee-pee” again. I had just given birth and was tired and thought I’d give myself a nice three month break before trying this whole ‘no diaper thing’. I thought I would be so exhausted that I wouldn’t feel like spending the extra time and effort observing and observing the kinds of grimaces or growls my son made before I eliminated him. This was supposed to be my favorite time to really bond and bond with my baby. Just too much work at first. Well, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it took almost no effort. Because instead with this new association word, I didn’t have to grab him by the waist and frantically grab the bowl, I held him over the bowl every now and then in the same position (your baby can also associate the position you hold in) and simply asked him to go “pee-pee”. Sort of like a Pavlov’s Bell link. If he didn’t have to go, he would turn or turn in seconds. If he did, he would try. He blessed his little face as he gathered himself and relaxed his small clenched muscles. The first day after my son was born I asked him to go to the bathroom and he went into the bowl four times! No word for lies. He was born with an awareness of where the muscles were, what they were for, and how to control them. Pretty incredible.

Talk about a confidence boost for mom. We were already communicating with each other! I knew we could try to be diaper free and use elimination communication. It was so close to my heart because it seemed so intuitive. It confirmed to me that we are complete in having everything we really need to raise our children. When you practice elimination communication, the process is natural and responsive rather than reactive. Cooperation is needed. The nice thing about this is that there’s no sudden transition to “potty training” when everything your child knows about the toilet is turned on its head when he turns – say three – and needs to be “trained” or coerced (or manipulated with m&m’s) to start pooping in the potty like a big boy. He is being taken away from the comfort of running into a corner and squatting and pooping in his diaper as he has done every day for three years. With elimination communication a child never learns that his diaper is his toilet. And he never has to completely unlearn what he already knows. If he pees his pants, he doesn’t yell “stop!!! wait!” from across the room. It is not reactive. It is a gentle process.

You don’t have to be a “peace and love” barefoot hippie or get excited about showing skin to have a diaper-free child. I don’t recommend babies running around town with bare bottoms. You don’t have to rip up your carpet or sell all your beautiful furniture. People from all walks of life do it. I always put a little cotton or fleece pants on my son with soft elastic around the ankles to prevent big puddles. Also, if I miss a pee, I can see when it’s wet right away.

Some days we would stay dry all day. Other days, when I was in the middle of a conversation, I would think to myself – hmm, it’s been a while, let’s finish what I was saying and then I’ll take him to the bathroom. And then I would see the look and know it was too late. He had to act on intuition. Time to “retune”. No big deal though, I’d pull a clean pair of pants out of my bag and change right away. He never had a tumor that interfered with his walking or my ability to really feel his cute dimple down while carrying him. He never sat in a wet or weathered diaper. He did not “put on his dressing gown.”

However, practicing elimination communication doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. Some of my close friends in Slovenia always had their son without diapers at home, but when they went out they put him in diapers. Another friend here in town first tried elimination communication by only taking her daughter’s diapers out at night because she found it easier to understand her elimination cues while they were co-sleeping.

When you become aware of patterns emerging around your baby’s elimination needs and communications, you can start holding them over a bucket, the potty, the toilet, or even a bush when you suspect they need to go. My friend who was curious to see if it would work with her older infant so we tried it when most babies seem to pee after waking up from a nap. Asking your baby to make it disappear as soon as he wakes up is a really good time to get that association word in there. And before you know it, you may end up getting all the reassurance you need to see that it really can work. Your baby is aware of its elimination process.

Elimination Communication is not only more comfortable for your baby, but it also helps you to be a more conscious and aware mother. Just like breastfeeding and babywearing, practicing miscarriage communication keeps you uniquely close to your baby and aware of their needs. As you raise your child, trust and love blossom – and the joy of motherhood increases tenfold. Take it from a mom who never changed her son’s diapers!
