Potty Problems – Potty Train a 3 Year Old
Need advice on how to potty train a 3 year old? Worried you might just have missed the bus to training land? Wondering where you went wrong and if it’s still possible to train your three-year-old?
My own toddler was still screaming “I hate the potty!” at three when I finally decided I’d had enough. By then I was also busy taking care of my one year old daughter and was completely in over my head with all the dirty diapers. So, despite the crying and begging (which can get to me at times, I must admit), I had to take off the nappies.
Surprisingly, my son didn’t take it as badly as I thought. A few days after our initial “small talk,” the tears and outbursts began to subside. Here are some tips that I found helpful in weaning my child from the diapers he was used to.
1. Make a ceremony out of it.
On the day you throw away all the diapers in the house, make sure your child is there to watch them. Make a show of it by telling him that he is no longer a baby but a “big boy” now and therefore doesn’t need diapers. Ask your husband to join in too.
2. Take your child shopping.
Bring your child with you when shopping for underwear. For daughters, make it a mommy and me kind of event. Ask them to choose the designs they like. For sons, ask their father to accompany them. This will make your little boy feel like he’s going through some important rite of passage – with dad supporting him.
3. Invest in a child-friendly potty.
Many children are afraid of the toilet because they might fall in. Buy a child-sized potty to ease this fear. However, don’t forget to display them in the full-sized bathroom and toilet. They will need to get used to it in the future.
Always be sure to offer encouragement and support to your little 3-year-old. There will be accidents. Just show them what you’d like them to do without making them feel bad about it. And make sure you always give praise whenever they do what they’re supposed to do.
