To notice your baby’s appetite, pay close attention to when he signals that he is full. Here are clues to look for:
1. A newborn spits out the nipple or falls asleep
2. In six to twelve months look for these following signs:
Your baby turns his/her head away to pace or end a feed
Your baby refuses to open his mouth
Your baby spits out their food or stores food in their mouth
3. At one to two years of age:
Your baby shakes his/her head no
Your baby puts his hand over his mouth and pushes the hand offering food
Your baby uses simple words like “No”, “Don’t” or “Away”
Finally, your baby pushes or throws a plate, cup or spoon
4. At two to three years of age:
Your baby combines words, “All done” or “Down”
Your baby pushes the plate away
Your baby is trying to remove his bib

However, as important as it is to let your child decide how much food they want, it can be one of the hardest things for a parent to do.
If a child’s natural appetite is impaired because they are often encouraged to eat when they are full, feeding problems may develop and determining when and how much to eat can become a battle between parent and child. Remember that many parents tend to give babies and toddlers larger portions than they need – and then expect them to finish all the food on their plate. Always start with small portions and then let your little one show you – in his own way – if he wants more.
How to make a delicious apple-pear puree for a six-month-old baby:
Seckel pears are delicious, tiny pears that are in season between August and January. Given their size, they’re perfect for making baby food purees, and because they’re naturally sweet, babies love them! Pears are also a rich source of nutrients.
Ingredients needed for the apple pear puree:
1. 1 ripe Seckel pear or 1⁄2 pear of another variety
2. 1⁄4 cup (60 g) unsweetened applesauce
3. 1⁄4 cup (60 ml) unsweetened apple juice
Stovetop Method for Apple Pear Puree:
First, peel, core and chop the pear. Place the pear in a small saucepan with the applesauce and cook, covered, over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, until the mixture is soft. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then add to the blender with the juice and blend to a smooth puree.
This recipe, covered tightly, will keep for 2 days in the refrigerator.
Each serving of applesauce pear puree contains: 28.4 calories; 0.0g total fat. 0.0 grams of saturated fat. 0.0 mg cholesterol? 1.0 mg sodium; 7.4g carbs? 0.9 g fiber. 0.1g of protein? 6.1 mg of calcium; 0.1 mg of iron? 9.5 IU vitamin A. and 3.7 mg vitamin C.
