Persistence – On the Road to Success

There is an uphill climb. A brutal 200m climb at a 45 degree angle on a paved road. Sprint up this hill. It beats me every time.

I’m afraid of it. But I’m not afraid of it.

The target? To sprint at 100% capacity

Every week I get closer

Every week I get stronger

I’m getting faster every week

This is persistence.

I looked it dead in the eye and said “You, I got you”. Just a matter of time

And so, I have found, is with life

If our goal is to achieve something worthwhile, it is imperative that we become familiar with perseverance and tenacity, many roads lead to success, but nothing beats sheer persistence over time.

How long?

When Jim Rohn was asked? “How long to try,” he answered calmly, “until.”

An excellent example of this can be found in the story of Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of KFC, I borrow a quote from an article I read:

“When Colonel Harland Sanders (founder of KFC) retired at age 65, he had little to show for himself except an old Caddy roadster, a $105 monthly pension check and a recipe for chicken.

Knowing he couldn’t live on his pension, he took his chicken recipe in hand, got behind the wheel of his truck, and set out to make his fortune. His first plan was to sell the chicken recipe to restaurant owners who would in turn give him a cut for every piece of chicken they sold – 5 cents per chicken. The first restaurateur he called turned him down.

The same with the second

And the third

In fact, the first 1008 sales pitches Colonel Sanders made ended up being rejected.

However, he continued to call the owners as he traveled across the US, sleeping in his car to save money. Prospect number 1009 gave him his first yes.

And KFC was born. “

This is just one example of persistence — there are thousands of such stories.

The more you persevere, the more you focus on the goal you are pursuing. The more focused you become the better prepared you will be to achieve it.

Occasionally, you’ll be tempted to give up, when the going gets tough you’ll wonder if it’s time to accept defeat and move on. Do you find yourself googling “when is it time to quit?” browse through the various articles but none hit home.

That’s because the truth is, only you know when, and the answer is “never.”

Never give up

An example

A friend’s aunt once told me a story about how a few years ago her goal was to get healthy. To do this he had to quit drinking, quit smoking, lose 20 pounds and start a regular exercise program.

She became healthy and it only took her 8 years. I was in awe; ‘8 years?’ I asked, she nodded. And he went on to explain the process. The alcohol had to go first because he had tried to quit smoking in the past, but when he consumed alcohol he felt a strong urge to smoke. So the alcohol had to go. And that took some time.

When she finally quit alcohol next was to quit smoking, the reason she was next was because to be healthy her lungs needed to be right, if she skipped this step her bad lungs would get in the way and she would have had trouble breathing when she exercised . And also, previous attempts to quit smoking taught her that she would gain weight.

So she quit smoking knowing she would gain weight but lose it all once she got used to not smoking and her lungs became healthier. It was a year before she was ready to exercise and lose weight.

Another two years later she had lost the weight and felt good and confident. She had focused on breaking one habit at a time and methodically worked on her long-term plan to get fitter and healthier.

It took many more years for him to be fit and healthy and at the level he envisioned, but he finally got there

If she had tried to change two or more key areas at once, she would likely have short-circuited with stress and failure in her goals would have been imminent.

She says she learned that working on one major goal or smaller ones at a time was better for her than trying to do it all at once. Her methodical approach to achieving her dream worked and today she is healthier and fitter than ever.

persistence

Goethe put it this way: “Austere perseverance, hard and constant, can be used by the least of us, and rarely fails in its purpose, for its steady power grows irresistibly with the passage of time.”

If we believe in ourselves and our ideas, goals and abilities, nothing becomes impossible and the impossible becomes nothing. Failure only becomes a teacher and trainer.

Will smith says “If you and I are in a hallway together and we’re competing, it’s either you go down first or I die in that hallway.” That’s the mentality of the winner

When you want it bad enough, you say to the obstacles that come your way “Bring it and then bring more”

Nothing can stop a determined person, and like pushing a ball into a body of water, everything will give way to a determined person’s will and goals

“It’s hard to beat a man who never quits” ~ Babe Ruth

Running in the race

I remember a childhood friend who started a part-time auto repair business in his home garage while we were in high school, learned his skills from his father who was a mechanic and had a way with nuts and bolts.

He started it for extra cash on the weekends and when we left high school we lost touch, I moved to a new city and lost his numbers

4 years later I had started my own business and visited the house. I found out that he had since moved out of his garage and now rented a building, had many workers, a nice office and 3 cars

What impressed me the most was when we pulled up, he showed me all the cars that needed servicing that were in the parking lot, I looked out and saw over 30 cars waiting to be serviced.

I was in awe, wonder, amazed. I gave him a serious pat on the back and let him know how well he did.

And soon after I started comparing, I got a little discouraged with my own slow progress and wondered how long – if I would ever reach this level of success. While I was doing this, he stopped me in mid-sentence and looked me dead in the eye and said “Don’t compare, run your own race, in your own lane”

I never forgot those words. I knew he was right, he knew he was right and I shyly nodded after a while in silence.

“Don’t compare, run your own race, in your own lane.”

Compare yourself to no one but yourself.

Compete only with the person you were yesterday.

This is how you shake off discouragement when progress is slow or nonexistent

Catfish and Koi

In the 1800s, a type of fish called common carp was bred for color in Japan, by the end of the century a number of color schemes had been established and this new breed of brightly colored variety fish became known as “Koi” from the Japanese word meaning “carp”

They were adapted as ornamental aquarium pond fish in Japan and had advantages over most other fish in being tolerant of freezing cold and able to survive low oxygen levels and poor water quality. They were also beautiful fish in a pond because of their colorful skin

The new breed quickly became popular in Japan and attracted the attention of travelers and vacationers, and soon after the Chinese and Europeans began importing them en masse.

Carriers began exporting them and soon discovered a major challenge. After the long journey and the months of little activity, the fish became weak and mushy and of lower quality than when they had left Japan.

This caused many commercial issues and lawsuits

However, they soon found a solution to the problem. put a catfish in the same tank as the koi fish.

This worked like magic. The catfish ate the weaker Koi and the stronger Koi got stronger and stronger, until they reached their destination the fish were fit, strong, alert and healthy.

What is your catfish?

Anything that checks you occasionally is good, anything that gets you back on track, on track and in alignment with your vision.

Get a catfish, whatever that is

Laying bricks

I quote John Carmack “Focus, hard work is the real key to success. Keep your eyes on the goal and just keep taking the next step toward its completion. If you’re not sure which way to do something, do it in two ways and see which works better” ~

Place one brick at a time

Big progress can be achieved with small steps

To reach the top of the ladder you take one step at a time

No great work was ever accomplished by indolence, and nothing great can be accomplished without effort.

“A dream doesn’t come true through magic, it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” ~ Colin Powell

Hard work

Hard work is the basis of great achievements and perseverance follows it. I am of the strong opinion that one cannot hope to defy the odds by casual effort.

Hard work is essential.

The drive towards massive achievements requires incredible amounts of hard work, persistence, energy, focus and dedication.

If you work at a startup or started a business and feel like you’re working too hard, too long, or sacrificing too much, find a job elsewhere that will meet your needs.

But as for visionaries, dreamers, leaders and risk takers. This is hard work worth doing. They know its value and appreciate it.

They are here to make a dent in the universe, to leave a mark, to leave something in the history books. There is nothing better than working hard at work worth doing.

When all is said and done and the long days of relentless hard work, sleepless nights and many cups of coffee are over, you will look back and say wow, I have found the recipe for success. I know what it takes.

Hard work is the single greatest competitive advantage in any human endeavor, Thomas Edison’s “1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”

It takes hours, days, months, even years of hard work and dedication to achieve overnight success

“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that win or lose, we have applied our best to the task at hand” ~ Vince Lombardi

This is your hustle

Turn that bolt

If it doesn’t turn, add some oil and turn it some more

And while he turns oil, another turns that

Put on blinders

Concentrate

Turn off the noise

Trust your judgement

Set your sails

Move forward

Drop, pick up, tap and repeat

Baby steps

Learn a lot, you will appreciate everything

Don’t rush, don’t wish it was sooner, easier. I wish it was harder, longer, harder. Better this way

Hustle is progress

It might not work out, but push anyway like you know it will

Celebrate the small victories.

Improve the bad

By doing this we will go much further tomorrow than we were yesterday

“There are no shortcuts to any place worth going” ~ Beverly Sills

“Good better better, never let it rest, until your good is better and your best better” ~ Tim Duncan
