How to Be a Mother to Orphaned Kittens
When you decide to become a mother to orphaned kittens, you only need to extend your patience, care and time to these animals. Here are the things you can do to make this job easier for you.
1. Give her a warm home.
Kittens need to feel warm. So, you need to make them a comfortable place. Put them in a small box and fill it with old clothes. Although you should put a 40 watt bulb over the box to keep it warm, you should cover it as little kittens are sensitive to light. Another way to keep them warm is to put hot water in a bottle and put that inside the box as well. Just replace the water when it has already cooled.
2. Feed the kittens using a dropper or syringe.
You can use a dropper for the first few days. This will be similar to a mother cat’s nipple. As little ones grow, they will need larger nipples and larger formula aids. So, you will also need larger syringes. Go to your veterinary clinic to buy used or new syringes.
3. Feed them kitten formula.
The kitty formula consists of one cup of whole milk, one egg yolk, one tablespoon of white corn syrup, and a pinch of salt. Mix all this in the blender and heat it on medium heat.
4. Feed them three times a day.
They should be fed only three times a day and on a regular schedule.
5. Groom and have them clean their bladder and bowels.
Since they cannot groom themselves, clean them with a wet towel. To help them empty their bladder and bowels, wipe the area under their tail with a wet towel.
6. Make a pan when they are one month old.
After four weeks, they can already empty their bladder and bowels on their own, but you will need to train them to go to the litter pan first. That way, you won’t have to keep cleaning up after their mess.
7. After six weeks, feed them solid food.
After six weeks or after they are teething, feed them solid food, such as kitten food. To get them to try the chow, give them an appetizing small canned kitty food.
8. Watch them grow and develop skills.
Kittens, while growing up, are like human babies. They can give you joy as they learn to do things and gain strength from playing with each other. This will really make you feel like a mother.
