So You Want a Guard Dog, Eh? (Basic Dog Training)

True protection dogs are FRIENDLY with people when their owner has no reason to feel threatened. The moment someone does something threatening the dog turns into a guard dog stance. The dog will wait for the owner’s command and direction – either to continue with its stance, to attack or to give up. Dogs that are constantly suspicious of strangers or anyone other than those they know are operating out of fear. A dog that feels like everything is something to fear and is aggressive is NOT a good guard dog prospect! Most dogs that have the potential to be good guard dogs are easy-going, non-reactive dogs. Fearful dogs will bite even the “good guy”! Dogs that are going to be guard dogs need to be strongly and positively socialized. They need to meet and greet LOTS of people and NOT be encouraged to growl, but rather told to stop it. This should be done during the primary socialization window between 6 and 16 weeks of age. NEVER reinforce (pet, stroke, comfort talk, feed) a dog for misbehavior and never encourage the dog to be afraid (“It’s okay” – NO!). A scared dog is essentially a loaded gun. a dog that will bite out of fear (called “fear”). Dogs need to be taught to be confident without being afraid.

Raising a dog as a protection or guard dog is not like raising any dog in your household. The exact same things should happen in the life of a potential guard dog that should happen in a dog destined to be a family pet – heavy, positive and frequent socialization. In fact, a dog that answers a stranger at the door by barking does not need to be a trained guard dog. Most dogs will bark at the door. A dog must have a well-rounded outlook on life and be able to behaviorally bounce back from each new experience before even moving on to the finer points of guard dog training.

I have never trained a dog to be a guard dog, but I am well aware of the general temperament of a dog that will do well to be a guard dog. If I wanted to train a dog to be a guard dog, I would NOT do it alone! I would seek out and train with people who have vast experience training dogs in this capacity (in another life, I would love to do this!).

I would encourage anyone looking to get a protection dog to contact someone locally to help you choose and train a dog for this line of work – I wouldn’t take it on myself. A guard dog is essentially a loaded gun. If you don’t have control of this weapon, you’re going to have problems.

Here is a very short list of things found in a good guard dog:

* Heavy game (tennis ball driving or trailer)

* High energy – most working dogs will drive you crazy with their activity level and need for physical and mental exercise!

* Able to quit on command (after teaching, of course!)

* Heavy work ethic. These dogs realize that they do not work alone and are a team with their handler

* Strong attention to their owner/operator

* Ability to focus

* Able to recover from “insult” (do not disintegrate under pressure)

* Wait for the owner/operator to decide to act (they don’t work on their own)

* After a long time (years, maybe!) and plenty of experience and training, a good working dog will be able to decide for himself if he needs

* Ability to adapt to new environments, surfaces, weather conditions

* Unreactive or impulsive

* A good, healthy working dog can pass the Temperament Test given through the American Temperament Testing Society.

* A good, healthy working dog should also be able to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizenship Test.
