Top Five Teething Toys
My little Abigail was a calm, happy little sprite. He rarely cried, slept early through the night and was generally a joy to be around. I told everyone I knew how amazing she was. This is what I get when I open my big mouth! Apparently someone alerted the teething gods to my arrogance and at 5 months old Abigail started teething. Then my world changed overnight as I was faced with a drooling, sobbing, frantic little pile of misery. The only way we got through it was with baby Tylenol and some great teething toys.
- Abigail’s favorite was one of the simplest – a ring filled with gel that I kept in the fridge. In fact, I bought half a dozen of them. I quickly discovered that my little one liked to suck on them too, and we lost quite a few over the course of a month (I later found two of them under the couch, covered in dust bunnies). Fortunately, these can be found at almost any grocery store and usually only cost a few dollars.
- Massage teeth. This one had a handle to hold onto and gently massaged Abigail’s swollen gums. He had to be in the right mood for it, but sometimes it worked wonders.
- Teething rattles. We had a variety of rattles and rings that offered various surfaces. Some had small rounded edges, others ridged, and some had smooth, solid surfaces. These come in a million cute shapes and sizes. We had an elephant with ribbed ears, a bear with legs and arms, a star with firecrackers and a caterpillar with all possible textures and shapes. One of Abigail’s favorites, however, was a teething set, mostly because it was easy to hold.
- Vinyl books. Although they weren’t teething at the time, Abigail had a set of children’s books that were vinyl. They were titled Baby’s Big Day, Baby’s Bedtime and Baby’s Puppy. They should have been titled Baby Stops Screaming in Teething Pain. He kept gnawing on them. Now there are little books marketed specifically as teething books, but any of the children’s books will work just fine.
- Soft toys. Although they were a bit rough after being chewed on, Abigail seemed to chew a lot on her soft dolls and toys. They are softer on the gums than hard plastic teethers and are easier for little hands to grip. They are machine washable – which is a good thing because they get very soggy and smell sticky after being chewed on all day. You can find many soft teething toys on the market now. Then again, we had at least half a dozen of them, which was good, because half were always in the washing machine. With a teething baby, I was lucky if the family had clean matching socks!
In addition to traditional teething toys, Abigail enjoyed teething cookies, bread crusts, toast and fingers (and once she got two teeth, I learned to keep my fingers out of her mouth!)
In the end, both Abigail and I made it through the teeth without going crazy. Now he is at the dentist and orthodontic appointments.
