Potty Training – How to Potty Train Your Toddler in Just One Day

As you know, raising a child can be a time of testing parents’ patience. It can be a period of upheavals, disappointments, one step forward and two steps back. And sometimes potty training can be a very long and tiring experience and something that we as moms can dread. Wet and messy underwear, surprises on the floors and the thought “will my child ever learn how to go to the toilet?”.

My daughters are now 16 and almost 12. They were potty trained when they were about 2-1/2 years old. And they were potty trained in just one day! Everyone laughed at me when I told them this. Moms at dinner parties would show off and think I was upset when I wanted to share my excitement, until weeks later they called me and asked how I did it?

How my kids trained in just one day and how yours can be too!

Well, that’s what happened. When Alicia, my oldest, was ready to potty train, I didn’t know what to do except sit her on a potty and hope for the best. Then one day I was shopping with a friend whose kids were teenagers, but she had used a system to toilet train her kids in just one day. And he told me, “it really worked!” Well the next week I called her over for coffee and sat her down and asked her all the specific details of what she had done.

To prepare for the daily toilet training you have ready

* a doll that can melt itself.

* a very sturdy chair potty with a pot that can be emptied and placed back on the chair,

* lots of drinks, salty food and treats,

* underwear that is about 2 sizes too big,

* apron with pockets.

Potty Education Day

On the morning of your training day, arrange for no one to be home. Put a note on the door explaining that you want No Interruption and turn on your answering machine and turn off your cell phone. For the rest of the day you will give your child your full attention and follow the toilet training program instructions. First teach your child to potty train the doll. This will give him the idea why and how to go to the toilet. She should learn how to take the doll to the potty in time, pull down her pants, wait for the doll to pee, pull up her pants, then have the doll empty the potty (with the fake urine) into the toilet and to put it back. potty potty. Also, have your child praise the doll enthusiastically and give rewards when the doll goes to the potty and whines.

Then, when your child has mastered potty training the doll, it’s time to teach your child to go to the toilet using the same steps for himself. Here give her plenty of drinks so she has plenty of opportunities to go to the bathroom. Teach her one step at a time, how to easily pull her pants up and down (being two sizes too big really helps here), how to sit on the toilet (potty chair) and relax until she either urinates or poops. How to wipe herself, pick up her knives and empty the potty into the toilet, then put her back on the potty chair by herself.

And remember to teach your child to wash his hands every time.

Rewards and Praise

Your child should receive rewards as he learns and for his correct behavior. Then teach your child what to do when he has an accident, how to go to the bathroom when he plays, and how to go to the bathroom when he plays outside. She can be given rewards and praise for Dry Pants, especially after she’s tired of going to the bathroom herself.

He doesn’t have to wear diapers to bed that night. Leave a night light on for her and the potty could be placed near her bed. The next day we celebrate with her and give her a Certificate of Achievement for Toilet Training. Yes it can happen and yes your child can be toilet trained in just one day!

I am convinced that you can do this too, when you know how to…

Step Step Step

1. Prepare your child by reading books like ‘I Want My Potty’ by Tony Ross and ‘Max’s Potty’ by Harriet Ziefert or ‘All By Myself’ by Dr Bill Gillham. Have your child watch family members go to the bathroom so they can see what’s going on and how to do it.

2. Prepare the items you will need, such as large knives, wipes, a wet doll and a sturdy potty chair, or make your home toilet suitable with a seat insert and steps or a box for your child to stand on.

3. Allow an uninterrupted day to teach your child to potty train the doll and then teach him/her the steps required to go to the toilet.

4. Praise your child enthusiastically whenever he does anything and clap and cheer when he actually urinates or has a bowel movement on the toilet and/or potty.

5. At the end of the day when your child is successfully potty trained or the next day have a celebration and give your child a Certificate of Achievement
