Junk the Junk Files For Better PC Function

A computer or laptop will slow down over a period of use. One of the main reasons is the accumulation of junk files. These should be deleted regularly because they tend to accumulate with each use of the computer. However, you should be careful when deleting files because you may end up deleting important system files.

What are junk files, where do they come from and how do they accumulate?

Junk files are unnecessary and are regularly created by the system with every use of the computer. For example, when you create a Word document, Microsoft also creates a temporary file to keep things running smoothly. These also help create an automatic backup of the document in progress. When you browse the Internet, the browser also automatically and temporarily downloads Internet information. These are saved to help open the same browser or web pages faster the next time. The computer also creates and saves them automatically even when it’s just turned on or off. These help make the system faster and more efficient. However, these are only useful for the current usage time. Once a document is saved and closed, these are no longer of much help. The same is true with temporary browser files. They tend to accumulate over time because they are not automatically deleted from the system. They become junk – unnecessary files and clutter the system. They also tend to take up a lot of precious disk space if not cleared regularly and allowed to accumulate.

How to delete junk files

Freeing up disk space

1. Click on the “Start” button to open the Start menu. For Windows 8, go to the Start screen and type “Control Panel” and select its icon when it appears in the search results.

2. The Control Panel window will open.

3. Select the “System and Security” tab.

4. In the “Administrative Tools” section, click the “Free up disk space” button.

5. A message window will appear while the system searches for possible files that can be deleted.

6. After a few seconds, the Disk Cleanup window should open. It shows a list of files that can be deleted, how much space each takes up, and the total disk space they all use.

7. If you’re not sure which one to delete, Windows has already checked for some safe ones. These include “Temporary Internet Files” which contain old cached web pages previously used to speed up browsing, “Downloaded Program Files” which are helper files that temporarily speed up the viewing of certain web pages and ” Thumbnails” which are small icons for videos, documents, music and photos.

8. Once the files to be deleted have been selected, select the “OK” button.

Disk cleanup

Another way to remove junk files is through the following steps:

1. Open the Start menu.

2. Select “All Programs”.

3. Select “Accessories”.

4. Select “System Tools”.

5. Click Disk Cleanup.

6. A window will open where you can see the list of computer drives. Click on which drive to clean, then click the “OK” button.

7. The same window as the one above will open, showing the list of those that can be deleted. Check the box next to those to be deleted then click “OK”.

Uninstalling programs

There are some programs that are unnecessary or have not been used for a while. These can also be considered junk files that are cluttering up disk space as they are no longer being used. Uninstall them with the following steps:

* Open the Start menu by clicking on the “Start” button.

* Select “Control Panel”.

* Select “Add or Remove Programs”

* A window will list all the programs installed on the computer.

* Check those that haven’t been used in a while or those that have never been used. To check whether a program is being used or not, check the information on the right side of the screen, under the “Last Active Use” column. Anything that hasn’t been used for a long time should be put away.

* Click on the program and select the “Uninstall/Change” tab at the top of the window.

Shortcuts

The computer often creates shortcuts to make future access faster and easier. These shortcuts also take up valuable disk space. Delete them by following these simple steps:

* Open “My Computer”.

* Browse to the “Documents and Settings” folder.

* Find “Owner” and then “Tools”.

* Select “Folder Options”, then the “View” tab.

* Select “Show hidden files and folders” then the “OK” button. Select “My Recent Documents”.

* A list of shortcut icons will appear.

* Click on all shortcuts and press “Delete” button. Select “Yes” to delete all selected shortcuts.

These steps should free up a lot of disk space and help your computer run faster. If not, other problems may be causing the slowdown, such as viruses. Check for these and other potential problems.
