From The West Coast To The Deep, Deep South

This morning, I saw my first armadillo since my sister picked me up at the Houston airport and drove us 3 hours deeper into Texas. The prehistoric-looking creature was scurrying around from the charred pile this morning. He finally ran off into the woods.

Moving from the West Coast to Deep East Texas has been a transition. Mom can’t stay alone, so I’m here as long as needed. I forgot how different my home state of Texas is from any other country in the world.

A bobcat crossed the road on my way into town on Friday. Before that, I saw an animal that I didn’t even know existed. It was like seeing a unicorn. I almost couldn’t believe it. It was a strong white deer. Others in town said they were rare but real.

I take that deer sighting as a good omen. It’s been quite a journey since I arrived in the deep, deep south. One man was trying to tell me he wanted to sell a ‘fakir’ so many times that I finally had to ask him to write it down. Apparently, he was trying to say ‘half an acre’ but had condensed it into five letters.

It’s nothing less than code talking here ever. “The devil is whipping his wife,” said one man. After a little thought, I remembered this means it’s raining while the sun is shining. We dress funny. We talk funny. i love us

It’s not enough to wear a belt buckle. It doesn’t even matter if it doesn’t look like a car door. Hats are stronger and will need to be crimped by hand. Straw in summer; feeling in winter. As it has always been.

There is a horse on our property who is a former champion. The lynx still stands proud and tall. He lives where I’m staying and I’m told he brought home a lot of those shiny buckles that cow people wear as trophies of rodeo winnings. He is over 20 years old, but that does not stop him from moving to the pasture before a storm.

There’s a funny little pony named Pedro that keeps catching my eye. I have said it all. He wanders around and follows me whenever he can. Last night, he patted my carrots and we watched a shooting star together.

Spocks (spoon/forks) are cross breeds between miniature horses and donkeys. There are a pair of them, and they are the first ungulates I have ever seen fight. They like to beat day and night.

Horses and cows are everywhere, as well as donkeys of all shapes and sizes. Turns out they’re more than lawn ornaments they eat, the smaller horses keep coyotes and venomous snakes at bay.

I tried to get Pedro to chase away a chicken snake, but he just walked past it. They only get excited when their lives are in danger, but the tall, black creature was easily five feet tall, and I didn’t like it in the yard.

Temperatures are just above freezing and spring is starting to show in the new growth on the trees. That’s how life goes on here in the Piney Woods of Deep East Texas. Stay tuned for updates and additions to our little piece of paradise called Misfit Island.
