Landscaping Weed Barrier Fabric – How to Install Landscape Fabric

When using landscape fabric, preparing the project site is just as important as the quality of the materials you use. While many people will place the barrier directly over the existing or barely prepared area, better performance and longer lasting results are more likely with good preparation.

To begin

Measure and mark the area. Most professionals use paint for inverted marking, but you can also use string, sticks, rocks, hose, or whatever you have available. Buy or order your own landscape fabric to make sure it’s ready when you start your project.

Remove all vegetation

Once your project areas have been measured and marked, remove all vegetation. Depending on the area you are working in, there are several ways to remove plants and vegetation.

On lawn areas that will be covered and/or seeded, we most always do a double application of a non-selective herbicide such as Make sure the area is actively growing, spray the herbicide as directed and then let it do its job. At 5 to 7 days after application, begin watering the area to encourage the growth of what may have survived and any seeds that may be viable. Repeat the herbicide application. You may also want to repeat again if necessary.

In some cases, we use a mower to remove the top few inches of the lawn. This is generally done after we have killed all the weeds and is mostly done to cut the area and make room for mulch, rocks or other ground cover.

I have seen other professionals install landscape fabric over areas that have only been mowed but not killed with a herbicide. I don’t recommend it. Blade cutters only cut the top surface of the grass and do nothing to kill the roots. This can be a problem in the future if you have aggressive weeds with deep roots or grasses such as Bermuda grass.

For non-lawn areas and old flower bed areas, you can use the herbicide method mentioned above. And for all areas, including lawn areas, you can use the herbicide method or solarization.

Solarization is essentially baking the soil and exposing it to extremely high temperatures that kill weed seeds and vegetation. This process is very simple and works very well, but it takes more time to do.

Land preparation

If you plan to plant plants in the areas where you install the fabric, you should work on soil amendments and nutrients before installation. If possible, and I recommend, use slow release organic nutrients and compost. You should also test the Ph of the soil and add lime or sulfur in the right amount if necessary.

Once the weed barrier is in place, you will only be able to add top surface applied fertilizers and will not be able to till the soil. Of course, you can add changes to each plant hole as you plant it. However, it is time consuming, messy and does not extend beyond the root zone of the plant.

Use a rotary tiller or shovel to turn amendments and nutrients 4 to 6 inches into the soil surface. Remove stones, sticks, debris and separate piles. Scrape the surface smooth.

Install the irrigation system

If you have an idea of where your plants will be and plan to have an automatic drip sprinkler system, now is the time to set it up. Lay out your main feeder hose and place the drip tube and emitters where your plants will be. If you plan on a bubbler system, it should have been installed before the area was manicured.

Fabric installation

The easiest way to do this is to set up the barrier first before planting your plants. Some people recommend using dowel pins to hold the material in place. It is an option. However, if you prefer to save money, you can keep the edges with the ground cover you intend to use. We usually place bags or piles of mulch, rock, or other ground cover around the edges and spread it after we’re done planting.

I have also seen some people plant the plants first and then place them on top of the plants. This is usually hard on the vegetation, breaks branches and takes a lot of time.

You can use a sharp knife or razor blade to cut the fabric, but the best and easiest way we’ve found to cut long runs is to use a pair of sharp scissors. And instead of working the scissors, hold them half open until the blades form a “V”. Hold the material where the two blades meet in the “V” and push them through the cloth.

PLANTING

Mark your plant area or place the plants to get a visual. Use a sharp knife, razor or scissors and cut an “x” in the fabric the size of your pot or root ball. Do not reduce the size of the pot. Just cut the “x” and fold the sheets down. Make the hole. Place and plant the plant correctly. Gently place the leaves up next to the plant.

Now place 2 to 4 inches of your chosen mulch over the area making sure to press down on the cut sheets and hold them in place.

Trim any excess landscape fabric around the edges making sure it stays tight around the edges.
