Top 100 Salsa Dance Songs – A Dancer’s Perspective (Part I)

When it comes to pleasing the dancers, you must play the 100 best salsa dance songs. But what are they and who decides what the 100 best salsa dance songs are?

This is a question that many salsa DJs have pondered when trying to play the 100 best salsa dance songs for their audience. There is just such a wide variety in styles, speeds, singers and songs that it makes choosing a full hand (or even what to play next) such a dilemma. However, a good DJ always finds a way to please the majority. On the other hand, a newbie DJ who doesn’t have the skill level, knowledge or has ever been real, dances with the meaning of song and music, salsero… well, a disaster is an understatement.

There have been times when I’ve had a ESPECIALLY hard day and I’m so stressed out! I go to salsa clubs, hoping to hear some of the top 100 salsa dance songs that will turn my stress into joy. Some DJs, from the first note/beat, manage to really do wonders, playing songs that are not only fun to listen to, but also get you dancing. The blood starts to circulate and yet there is a shiver down the spine. The legs start moving… and no matter how aware of people watching you are, you just can’t help but move your legs (and get lost in that rhythm!).

Then there are those DJs who don’t understand the music or the words, much less the meaning or feeling of the songs. The type of DJs who either play the same songs over and over, in the same sequence even, every time they DJ at an event/club. OR even worse, the kind who look like they just stopped at the local Starbucks, saw a salsa CD among the Frank Sinatra and Yoga Relaxation Jazz CDs, and decided… “sounds good, I’ll play it all night.”

Like an “Old Style” salsa dancer who understands what the singer is singing (and his “soneos” [improvisations]), these things just totally turn my salsa joy dial, almost, to the bottom, as the frustration sets in, the desire to listen to any of the top 100 salsa dance songs.

What you’ll find, below, is a list I’ve compiled of the top 100 salsa dance songs being played by DJs around the world. It is a compilation of the most common songs found on the DJ website and articles from around the world. I spent 2 months researching, asking questions and listening to each song to prove its validity (It started as a list of 500; but I’ve taken out all the Cha-chas and some Merengues that sneaked in). I also broke down the list into top 5 lists of 100 salsa dance songs. KEEP IN MIND, there are a lot more than these 100 best salsa dance songs out there; These are just the ones chosen by DJs around the world (at least to post), according to my research; plus some of my own, which I play when I DJ. Also, they are in alphabetical order and NOT in order of popularity or dance ability.
