How to Make Paper Flowers Using My Secret Sources of Inspiration

Want to know some of my secrets for making paper flowers? One of my secrets to making paper flowers comes from remembering my childhood paper crafting lessons with my beloved aunts. Here’s a reminder of how to make a napkin flower if you need it, or if you never got around to learning how to make them in the first place.

How to make a tissue flower that looks like a carnation:

Start with a 2-ply napkin. Fold in half lengthwise (along the existing fold) and cut in half along that side so you end up with four layers of pastry. Let the four layers stack all together.

Now start at one end of the length and start folding the tissue back and forth in an accordion fold. Continue folding until you have folded all the fabric.

Then take a piece of florist’s wire, or a piece of regular twine or a twist tie, and tie the fabric together tightly in between the folded folds.

Then take out the pleats and carefully separate to form a clove. You can use crayons or stamp ink to cut out your carnation petals, although I have to admit I didn’t know about this last step when I was a kid.

How to make paper flowers now:

I think making paper flowers as a child was one of the reasons that led to my lifelong interest in papercraft. My secret to making paper flowers now? Paper fists! I often make paper flowers from punched shapes like hearts and circles, and trim those shapes to look more like petals and leaves as I need them.

It is very fun to make different flowers from paper.

Something that helps me create new flower forms is nature itself. I found that when I studied living flowers, I could see that there were usually repeating shapes that made them up. If I looked at a flower petal, it often looked like a circle or oval shape, or had a small indentation that suggested a heart shape. From this idea I could punch a shape that was close enough to the actual shape of the petal and sometimes it would only take a little reshaping of the petal with my scissors to create a petal that looked like it was from the type of flower I was looking at. .

It’s the same when I look at flower centers, flower petals and buds. Everyone suggests basic shapes that I can make with punches and scissors.

Another thing nature has taught me is that flowers are usually not perfectly flat. They usually have a three-dimensional shape because the petals are rolled or curved or folded or scratched. Again, nature teaches me what to do to make my flat shapes look more realistic. I take a flower shaper and shape my petals and leaves with it, often before I assemble my flower all together. It’s amazing how a little shaping of the components of my flower can make it look even more alive.

What to do with your paper flowers after you’ve made them:

I like to play with paper shapes to see if I can make a paper flower out of them. I usually have a project in mind before I start making flowers, or colors or a theme to guide my thoughts as I make my flowers.

I then use these creations on leftover book pages and card fronts, or even in gift wrapping or to decorate 3-d (or off-page) projects. It’s satisfying for me to have a unique embellishment to use when working with paper.

So the real secret to making paper flowers goes back to that old saying “Be sure to stop and smell the roses!” In this case, I want to change the saying to also remind you to “Stop and LOOK at the roses”. A little time observing real flowers can pay wonderful dividends for us paper crafters when making our own paper flowers.

Happy paper crafting!
