Scrapbooking and Visual Journaling

If you’re used to creating painted pages, collages, adding rubber stamp letters or personal hand lettering to your Journal pages, you might just want to add Scrapbooking to your repertoire. Your pages don’t have to be neat, tidy and “from the book” type of sites you may have seen before. You can add pizazz to your pages and still add photos and create your own unique scrapbooking style. In fact, now that the recession has affected so many of us, people are much more careful about what they spend on scrapbooking supplies. As a visual journalist you have an advantage as you are already used to using alternative articles to update your site. Here are some ways to enrich your pages without breaking the bank:

• flat hammer bottle caps, add a small photo and cover with Diamond Glaze, paste to your page
• keep used ticket stubs, receipts and clothing tags/tickets and use them on your pages – you can add them to photos related to the item ie. A picture of a new dress along with the decorated price.
• Use scraps of fabric as a border on your page
• Punch holes in an old fork and glue it to the front of an album. This would be especially significant if the album is about Food.
• Use spam with colorful pictures to decorate a vanity page
• candy wrappers can be attached to your creation for a fun metallic look
• wire twigs to your site for an outdoor spread
• if the sole of your shoe has fallen off, put it on a “travel” page.
• crochet a chain with the remaining yarn and sew to your page
• attach safety pins to a “tensioned side”
• Use spray paint over a painted background to pop on the teenagers
• make lists on lined paper, tear the edge and glue
• use masking tape or duck tape to attach photos
• Sew a beaded border with the remaining beads
• have a drawer of unwanted jewelry – broken and discarded, put a piece in your sticky feathers or leaves on a painted background
• don’t throw away the crepe paper strips – tape them up and stick them to your page
• keep some of the slightly used birthday candles and wire them into a birthday spread
• create textured backgrounds by cutting your stamps out of styrofoam trays and foam plates. I cut stamps out of a flip flop thrown from a Spa once! Brush on some folk art paint and stamp on your background
• Hold the paper from the birthday gifts, spread the glue on the background, glue the tissue creating wrinkles. This will give you a nice text background
• for a whimsical background create a patchwork background by photocopying your color and black and white art, cutting and pasting underneath. You can also add randomly painted squares of paper that have been sprayed, sponged, torn or stenciled.

There are so many ways you can combine Scrapbooking and Visual Journaling to create a wonderful Scrapbooking spread. The beauty is that you can do this on a budget using supplies you have on hand!
