I began to read the Bible, but there was so much that seemed completely strange – a great God who created everything, but who built into sub-human beings the freedom to go very far out of the way. After that, all was hatred, bloodshed, incessant wars and idolatry, strange happenings, deep discussions, a hymn book, and prophets who seem to know the future. Then Jesus came to set things right, but was killed and said he would rise again. Really, how is it that Christianity makes so much of all these ancient scriptures?
• THE PLAN
Yes, at first glance, the Bible looks like a disjointed collection of old writings. So is it some kind of ancient puzzle book for the educated person who had the time and could read to see if one was clever enough to crack the mystery and solve the main plot?
No, despite the many different writings, there are many amazing connecting threads that run right through the Bible that tie it all together.
• THREAD
Here are a few, with just one biblical reference. This shows that there are only two kinds of wise answers to ultimate questions; those that come from natural human thinking and those that reveal the wisdom of God in the Bible.
However, the Bible teaches that our natural wisdom is perverted and foolish, “For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the foolishness of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews seek after signs and Greeks after knowledge, but we preach Christ crucified’ (1 Corinthians 1:21). These words show that natural wisdom will not find God, but there is a message that we must believe. It seems foolish, but in fact , reveals the truth from God; how we can know it and be saved from eternal judgment through ‘Christ crucified’.
• PROMISES
Here we see that the purpose of the Bible leads to the coming of Jesus Christ, the one promised in ages past. And as we begin to see how Christ is the center of God’s eternal purpose, we also see how the various threads are woven together, growing to form an amazing good news.
The Bible reveals the one true and living God. As the creator of all things he has an eternal purpose, which beginning in time will reach a great conclusion on the Day of Judgment, followed by eternity, a life with God in a perfect, new world for all who have believed in Christ crucified and risen to reconcile them to God. But for those who defy him and never return to Christ, there will be eternal damnation in Hell.
After our first parents fell into open rebellion against God, they thought they were wiser than God and had become masters of their own destiny. But instead, they were deceived.
• SERIOUSLY
This introduction of sin into our humanity brought terrible sins such as pride, vanity, hatred, murder, wars, and ugly, selfish living. No, this is not evolution – this is a fall into open rebellion against God, the source of all perfection. The fall into sin made us all guilty before God. Now we are all like foolish sheep who have lost their way and so need true wisdom and peace from God to fill our hearts and minds.
Many wonderful promises in the Old Testament portion of the Bible show that God would send a unique person who would save people from their sins. This Savior came in the person of Jesus, who performed many great signs to confirm the truth of his claims, and even his hostile rejection and cruel death were clearly foretold.
And when God’s justice demanded the severest punishment for true moral guilt, his overflowing grace brought us an almighty, divine Savior.
So the threads combine to show how he, the eternal God, would love to make a way back to God. In this way God would punish sin to satisfy his perfect justice. Then his pardon would be offered, freely and justly in the gospel of Christ, which makes it clear that Christ, the sinless Son of God, shed his blood in sacrifice on behalf of others, to endure righteous judgment. of God that the guilty rebels deserved. This is the grace of God and this is good news.
• LIFE
Thus, thus all the threads intertwine – the almighty, living Creator, the entrance of sin, true moral guilt, sorrow and death, the old sacrifices fulfilled in a final sacrifice of Jesus’ death, God’s promises, his love and wonderful, his forgiveness and strength for the daily life of purity and joy in the Holy Spirit, living for the glory of God. All show a related theme; God’s purpose to deal with sin and make a glorious new home for Christ’s redeemed family, his chosen Bride.
