Used Books Classifications For Collectors
Used books and bookstores are a great way to spend an afternoon if you have the time. Both are relaxing and allow your mind to wander while making new discoveries. I enjoy reading and find that most topics interest me to some degree. I think that’s why I especially like used bookstores. They allow me to pursue my various interests for minimal expenditure of my hard earned money.
Old books are especially intriguing as they provide portals to other times. My first interest in old books began as a child when my mother bought and read to me the Little Colonel series. It was even more real when I saw the Shirley Temple movies. Knowing that I could look at a time that was not my own allowed me to reflect and observe my own time.
Rare books also take my breath away, those when opened reveal an author autograph with a note inside. They make the story secondary, and the author’s life experiences its own story in ways that mere knowledge of the facts never can.
You just never know what you’re going to find in a thrift store.
Many collect these types of books as investments or for other personal reasons. I myself have acquired almost a complete set of the Little Colonel series with the help of my mother and the Grace S. Richmond books. They are proudly displayed in my living room behind glass.
When looking for books to collect, it’s important to know that their condition is important when assessing a book’s value. Below are some typical classifications used by book collectors.
Like new
This is somewhat self-explanatory. It means the book is in the condition it should have been when it left the publisher. Some people call this condition mint or numismatic.
Good (sometimes labeled F or FN)
This grading means it is like new but allows for the normal effects of time in an unused book that has been very well protected. A good book shows no harm.
Very Good (sometimes labeled VG)
This describes a book that is worn but not torn. For many book collectors, this is the minimum acceptable condition for all but the rarest items.
Good (sometimes labeled G)
Which in reality is not very good). Used to describe the condition of a moderately used book that is complete with no missing pages.
Right
Fair books show wear, but all pages of text and illustrations or maps are present. May lack endpapers, half-title and even title page.
Poor
This describes a book that has the full text but is so damaged that it is only of interest to a buyer who wants a copy to read. If the damage makes the text illegible, then the book is not poor either.
Once you go below poor quality, there is no classification. You may find that some have been sectioned off if there is any value in them or simply discarded.
When looking for books to collect, you’d do well to keep these classifications in mind before spending a lot of money. You never know what treasure you might discover while browsing a used bookstore; and it’s a lot of fun even if you find nothing but more books to read!
