Is Your Boss Difficult?

Most people get stuck on the career ladder simply because they lack the skills to effectively manage their boss. For those who experience setbacks in their careers despite having the skills needed to succeed, they should reevaluate their relationship with their boss. If they know it’s not cordial, then they need to do something about it urgently. And I have given the solution in this text in question form entitled “Is your boss difficult?”

It is authored by Richard Dare Ajiboye, a human resource practitioner who holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) from the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State; Post Graduate Diploma from Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos, Lagos State and Master of Business Administration from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, all in Nigeria.

Ajiboye is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria. A motivational speaker, the author is the Assistant General Secretary, Corporate Affairs of the Bible Society of Nigeria.

Structurally, this text is divided into ten chapters. As already stated, the introduction constitutes the first chapter of the text. In this chapter, the author, through a random survey conducted in mid-2006 in several Nigerian companies, provides a collection of views of subordinates for whom he is a boss, based on the relationship that exists between them and their bosses.

According to one of the respondents, “A boss is a person with authority in a workplace or situation. He or she is responsible for the actions taken in a department or an organization. My relationship with my previous and current bosses has been wholeheartedly, and it has helped shape my corporate life.”

Another respondent said, “Typically, my current boss is an autocrat. He throws paper at me when I do the wrong thing, yells, abuses, and kicks me out of his office. He likes to ask questions even when he’s expected to have a dialogue.” with Me… the only way out of his pressure would be to ask for a transfer or change my job.”

According to Ajiboye, it is quite clear that if more people were allowed to express their views, they would again revolve around positive or negative comments about who a boss is and the relationship that exists between them and their bosses.

The author adds that it is clear that individuals have described their relationships with their bosses and who a boss is from their personal background. Ajiboye asks if any of the respondents’ negative views describe the relationship with your current boss, stressing that if so, all hope is not lost.

The author says that it is easy to manage subordinates because of the power and authority that a leader has. Ajiboye teaches that the boss has the carrot he dangles for good performance and the stick he uses when subordinates violate organizational or work standards.

He explains that most people are good at managing their subordinates although sometimes there are problems in doing so due to human complexity. Boss management is usually more problematic because the influence in this case can only be persuasive and non-directive, asserts Ajiboye.

He adds that the boss reserves the right to accept or not to accept the obedience of subordinates. Ajiboye advises that if you are aware of the simple fact that your boss’s success is somehow yours, you will do everything possible to succeed.

The second chapter is based on the subject of boss types. According to the author here, just as human beings are different in personality, so are bosses different from each other. He explains that no two people have the same personality traits. Such differences, however small, would make a big difference in relationships, perception, decision-making and approaches to problem solving, Ajiboye adds.

In his words, “You can make a serious mistake by comparing your boss with others or with any of your former bosses. He is a unique and completely different person. The sooner you realize this and deal with it in according to the circumstances, the better. The secret to succeeding. in any relationship, inclusive work environment, is the ability to understand and appreciate the differences between people.”

The different types of bosses identified by Ajiboye are the achievement-oriented/autocratic boss; people-oriented boss; the laissez-faire boss and the situational boss. This author says that an achievement-oriented/autocratic boss is one who is driven by results and does not care how results are achieved, especially since he has dictatorial tendencies.

In terms of a people-oriented boss, Ajiboye posits that this type of boss, although interested in getting results, is primarily concerned with the welfare of staff and is democratic in nature and conscious of collective commitment or teamwork.

According to the author, a laissez-faire boss is deficient in his style of getting things done and often sees his subordinates as technocrats who must know what to do at all times. As for a boss situation, Ajiboye educates that this is a complete person in the main subordinates. The author states that a situational boss is a combination of the three types of bosses mentioned earlier and leads by situation, person and time.

In chapters three to six, Ajiboye analytically analyzes such X-ray concepts as the functions of an executive; how to understand your boss; managing the relationship with your boss and the skills needed to manage your boss.

The seventh chapter is entitled “Advice for Self-Management.” According to the author here, it is quite clear that successfully managing your boss starts with how well you are able to manage yourself. The author adds that it will be absolutely difficult for a person who lacks the proper qualities to manage himself to manage another person properly.

He says that most of the leadership problems that have been experienced are not unrelated to the fact that people who are not mature enough to manage themselves are for one reason or another wrongly designed to manage others.

Ajiboye points out that to be a good manager, you must be able to plan your days and activities; be calm under pressure; develop yourself; maintain good health and minimize your expectations of people.

In chapters eight through ten, he discusses management tips for your boss; why your boss can be difficult and the conclusion of how to achieve effective people relations.

Stylistically, this text is on the high rung of the scale. For example, the language of the text is standard and embroidered with good word order and accurate diction. Concepts also reflect a high level of primary and secondary forms of research, as well as logical presentation.

To reinforce the readers’ understanding and constantly remind them of the thematic direction of the text, Ajiboye uses a paraphrasing technique to achieve conceptual restatement. In addition, the interrogative mode of the title creates suspense, easily arouses and maintains the interest of the readers, while the exterior design of the front cover reinforces the title.

However, there are some punctuation and interpretation errors in the text, eg, “Executive Director Human Resources, Cadbury Nigeria Plc” (page 28), instead of “Executive Director, Human Resources, Cadbury Nigeria Plc”; “He is AGS – BSN Corporate Affairs” (page 28), instead of “He is the Assistant General Secretary, Corporate Affairs of the Bible Society of Nigeria”, etc.

Overall, this text is a specimen of a high level of intellectual interface, reflecting the perfect combination of human resource management and motivational forms of discourse. It is a must-read for all subordinates, managers, CEOs, entrepreneurs, and organizations that value corporate success and harmony.
