How to Print From a Laptop Or Desktop Without a Printer Cable
If you have wireless internet connections at home with most of you using laptop computers, you can all have access to just one printer without having to connect a printer cable directly to the laptop. How?
First you need to get a router, especially a wireless router. This will allow all computers to connect to the Internet anywhere in the home without the need for a restrictive LAN cable attached to the laptop somewhere. It will also allow you to connect and communicate with other computers within the network. And this will allow you to use printers and devices within the network. Here’s how to set it up:
Step 1: Install the router near the Internet adapter. If you are using wireless internet connection, it is easier to connect. Simply unplug the adapter from the back of your computer and connect it to the router’s WAN port on the back. This is the port separated in color and position from the others. For those using a DSL connection or any modem connection, simply remove the Ethernet cable that connects the modem to the back of the computer. Now you need to connect the modem to the WAN port of the router.
Step 2: Assuming your laptop is already wireless ready (most of the latest laptop models are already wireless ready), it will automatically receive the internet signal as soon as you turn on the laptop. Some models require you to flip a switch or press a button to detect wireless connections.
Step 3: Turn on your router and host computer. Insert the boot disk that came with your router. Follow the guide closely. Now you can open a browser and start configuring the settings there. In the address bar, enter the IP address of your router. This information is usually found in the manual. Enter your password and username. It will direct you to a page where you need to change the password settings and SSID name to make it more secure. Save the settings and then exit the page.
Step 4: Your Internet is now working. You can now connect a printer. Use another Ethernet cable and connect one end to the back of the printer and one end to the back of the router.
Step 5: Your computer network should now detect new devices within your network. That computer software should be installed on all your computers, including your laptop. After that, go to Control Panel and click “Devices and Printers” to add it to your local network.
