How to Install Yellow Dog Linux on PS3

If you didn’t already know what Linux is, it’s basically an operating system just like Windows. There are slight differences with the way things are laid out, but for the most part the two OSes are the same. The only difference is in price, where with Windows you have to pay hundreds of dollars, Linux is completely free and available for download all over the web.

Linux is built for the PC, but specific versions can be installed on the PS3 to turn it into a supercomputer. While you can install Ubuntu, Redhat, Kubuntu and even Fedora, the best distribution to choose is Yellow Dog Linux. The reasoning is that Yellow Dog was commissioned directly by Sony to be built for the PS3.

Installing Yellow Dog Linux on your PS3 is actually quite simple. First you’ll want to quickly back up all your save files. Not that anything is likely to go wrong, but just in case. On your PS3 go to System Settings and select the Format Utility option. A popup should ask you if you want to continue and format your hard drive. Click the Yes option. When prompted for partition sizes, select Custom and then provide 10 GB for a new partition.

Go ahead and insert the Yellow Dog ISO disc into your PS3. If you haven’t downloaded it already, just search the web and burn it to disc using something like Daemon Tools. In your PS3 menu, go to “System Settings” once again, then there should be an option to “Install Other OS”. Obviously this is the option we want! The system will then scan for OS images and find our drive.

You will then be guided through the entire installation process, much the same as if you were installing Linux or Windows on a standard computer. During this time, any PS3 controllers will stop working, so make sure you have a mouse plugged into the USB port, otherwise we’ll have to start all over again!

Make sure you have enough time to sit there and watch the OS install. It may take a very long time and during the installation you cannot touch your PS3 at all. Even disconnecting a USB or external hard drive will cause the installation process to fail and you’ll have to start over.

Once the process is complete, you should now have a dual boot PS3. You can boot into either the standard PS3 operating system to play games, or your new Yellow Dog installation to use your PS3 as a normal home computer.
