How to Dramatically Reduce Engine Oil Burning
Some problems can cause engine oil to burn. First, you need to figure out if your engine oil is burning, leaking, or just being used at a higher rate than normal.
Signs of burnt oil are increased crankcase pressure, exhaust smoke, increased oil usage and reduced engine pressure (caused by worn valve seals). Regardless of the number of problems that can lead to burning engine oil, you can check for a few problems before calling a mechanic.
1. Check your valve covers. If your valve covers are not tightened properly, slow flow and no pressure can occur. Take care that the bolts are not loose, but remember not to overtighten, bend or crack the covers. To avoid over-tightening, use a torque wrench.
2. If a loose valve cover is not causing the problem, remove it. Check your O-rings and gaskets. If they have cracks, you should replace them immediately. Gently pry open the O-ring or gasket using a screwdriver, then clean out any debris and install new gaskets.
3. Use an additive that helps reduce oil burn or increase the oil rating for your engine. If you are using 10W-30 oil, change it to 10W-40 oil. You may want to consider using a single grade oil. During the summer, a 40-weight oil is ideal, and a 20-weight oil is great during the winter season. Regarding the use of additives, some experts have different ideas and recommendations. Car manufacturers neither discourage nor encourage the use of additives. These steps can improve the thickness of the oil making it more effective at protecting engines.
4. Check the oil filter. Check if there is oil trapped in the filter or if the oil is bypassing the filter. Remember, unfiltered oil, i.e. dirty oil, burns faster than clean diesel engine oil. Make sure you only have one oil filter gasket. If you have an old one, make sure it is removed. Otherwise, you will have a leak, bad seal, or poor pressure. Replace your filter if it is old and not working properly. Be sure to change it every time you change the oil.
5. Change the oil. This basic method alone can greatly reduce burnt oil problems. If engine oils are used for a very long time, they can become quite dirty, which makes them easier and faster to burn. Also, your choice of engine lubricant can have a big impact. Some oils can drastically lower your engine’s operating temperature by as much as 5 percent (or as much as 6-8 degrees Celsius).
