The Nature of Full Time Work May Be Changing

The March 2013 Labor Force Survey, released by Statistics Canada, presented a disappointing picture for full-time employment in March. However, although there was a decline in full-time positions compared to February, the employment rate increased compared to the same period last year by 203,000 more jobs, most of them full-time. Part-time employment and self-employment have continued to grow over the past three decades, and full-time employment has remained relatively unchanged at 50% of the total working population.

The challenge of focusing on a month’s worth of data when it comes to employment means we may be missing the mark about the future of full-time employment. Employment growth should be about the continued growth of new positions, but may not mean full-time work with the same employer for an extended period of time. The development of new positions must be about creating and maintaining the employment opportunities that come with the future and the ultimate challenge is matching current and future skills needs with people looking for work.

Rick Miner, former President of Seneca College, in his report Jobs of the Future: Options and Possibilities comments that “… the new jobs for which we and our children must prepare will not always be unknown today; many will be modifications and adaptations of jobs already being done, though often with new titles and requirements new training. Some old However, jobs will certainly disappear, as they have in the past.”

But with the rapid pace of technological advancement, it can become increasingly difficult to develop, employ or prepare for future skills when we cannot know what they are. This means that employers and employees (current and future) will need the ability to translate trends into current positions.

Today, workplace factors that influence the nature of work include;

• Increased communication in social media inside and outside the organization;

• advances in technology to support information and data storage and exchange;

• Advances in online training to support on-the-job and 24/7 skills development;

• business-oriented online sites to provide more opportunities for employers and recruiters to find a wider variety of potential candidates; of course

• aging workforce.

These factors suggest that employers and job seekers will need to continue to invest in skills development and training. In 2006, the Canadian Council for Learning found that Canada trailed the US and Great Britain in investment in training. Thirty percent of workers in Canada participated in job-related education and training compared to 35 percent in the UK and 45 percent in the US. As a percentage of total payroll, the US spent about fifty percent more than Canada. In 2009, the same council reported that sixty-seven percent of future jobs would require some form of secondary education and skills training. Will employers be willing to increase their investment?

Many leadership positions are held by boomers and their expertise must be transferred to the next generation of leaders. This will require a commitment to training and development where mentoring and coaching processes help identify critical skills and create alignment between these skill needs and those people identified as future leaders. This may further increase training and development costs, which will affect the growth of full-time positions.

Being employed full-time can end up being employed by more than one employer at the same time, as a contractor juggling a number of different projects at once, or moving from contract position to position. of the contract with little, if any, gap between the contracts.

Flexibility and creativity will be required by both employers and employees as the nature of full-time work may change.
