How to Lead and Recruit the "Best of the Best" MLM Team
Network marketing requires leadership and a strong and resilient team.
Leaders set direction and influence others to follow that direction. Leadership is the notion that leaders are individuals who through their actions facilitate the movement of a group of people toward a common or common goal. This definition implies that leadership is a process of influence.
There are many “schools of thought” to explain what makes an effective leader. Older theories try to identify common traits or skills that make an effective leader. Contemporary theorists focus on the actions of leaders rather than characteristics. Underlying the trait approach is the assumption that some people are natural leaders and are endowed with certain traits that other individuals do not possess. This is an ongoing debate.
Research has compared successful and unsuccessful leaders to see how they differed in physical characteristics, personality, and ability. A recently published analysis of leadership traits identified six core characteristics that most effective leaders possess: drive, motivation, honesty and integrity, self-confidence, cognitive ability, and business knowledge.
Traits are the characteristics of leaders, skills are the knowledge and skills, or competencies of leaders. The competencies a leader needs depend on the situation. Peter Drucker, one of the most well-known contemporary management theorists, offers a pragmatic approach to leadership. He believes that consistency is the key to good leadership and that successful leaders share the following three skills, which are based on what he refers to as good old-fashioned hard work:
-to define and create a sense of mission
– except leadership as a responsibility and not a rank
– to win and keep the trust of others.

Now that we have a clearer understanding of what a leader is and or how leadership affects the team, let’s take a look at how leadership affects recruiting the “best of the best” network marketers to your team. We’ve probably all experienced the old saying “the team is only as strong as its weakest link”. As MLM leaders, we need every network connection to be strong in order to thrive.
The Gallup Organization, founded by George Gallup, has been studying human nature and behavior for more than 75 years. Gallup has a reputation for providing relevant, timely and visionary research on what people around the world think and feel is the cornerstone.
Over a decade ago, Gallup unveiled the results of a landmark 30-year research project that created a global conversation on the topic of leadership with a particular focus on strengths. The team identified 34 strengths. As MLM leaders, we need to learn from Gallup’s findings. The researcher identified that doctors, lawyers, housewives and even the “best of the best” MLMers rose to the top of their profession by focusing on their strengths as opposed to trying to fix their weaknesses.
More than 3 million people have taken Gallup’s Strength Finder assessment, which forms the basis of several books on the subject, including the #1 international bestseller Strength Finder 2.0.
Gallup scientists have also examined decades of data on the specific topic of leadership. What makes a great leader as opposed to a good leader? They studied more than 1 million work teams, conducted more than 20,000 in-depth interviews with leaders, and even interviewed more than 10,000 followers worldwide to ask exactly why individuals followed the most important leader in their lives.
In Strengths-Based Leadership, New York Times bestselling author Tom Rath and Barry Conchie reveal the results of this research. Based on their findings, the book identifies 3 keys to being a more effective leader:
1. Know your strengths and invest in the strengths of others
The research identified that when an organization’s leadership fails to focus on individual strengths, the chances of a team member being engaged is about 9%. However, when leadership focuses on the team member’s strengths, the odds go up to almost 73%. When leaders focus on and invest in their network, the chances of team members being engaged increases eightfold.
2. Getting people with the right strengths on your team and maximizing their strengths
While the best leaders are not well-rounded, the best teams are. Gallup research found that high-performing teams have strengths in 4 distinct areas of leadership power: Execution, Influence, Relationship Building, and Strategic Thinking.
Executive Strengths include: Achiever, Adjuster, Trust, Consistency, Consultative, Discipline, Focus, Accountability and Reset.
Powers that influence include: Enabler, Command, Communication, Competition, Maximizer, Assertiveness, Importance, and WOO (Winning Others).
Relationship building strengths include: Adaptable, Developing, Connecting, Empathic, Harmonious, Inclusive, Individualizing, Positivity, and Connecting.
Strategic thinking strengths include: analytical, contextual, futuristic, ideas, input, intelligence, learner, and strategic.
3. Understanding the needs of those who look to you for leadership.
Team members follow leaders for very specific reasons. When thousands of followers were asked, they were able to describe exactly what they need from a leader with remarkable clarity:
