The Effect of Flooding in Soils – Part 4

Management of flood affected lands

Following on from previous articles about the effects of flooding on your vegetable garden, in this article we look at soil management.

Conditions you are likely to find after flooding

  • Flooding can cause loss of mulch and leaching of nutrients.
  • Rising flood waters can cause topsoil to crust or deposit a fine layer of silt, which can prevent oxygen and water from penetrating.
  • Some soils, especially those with high clay content, can compact and form a surface crust after heavy rainfall and flooding.
  • Shallow water can remain stagnant and heat up rapidly in hot conditions, which is likely to cause rapid death to any plant growing in shallow water.
  • Flooding can also cause the release of nutrients absorbed from the soil or trapped nutrients, which will result in the germination of accumulated weed seeds.
  • All these effects require management.

When can you begin to repair damaged soils?

Although soils should not be tilled until most of the excess water has drained away, in some cases waterlogging may continue, especially in sandy or clay soils where there is a pan or perhaps a shallow impermeable clay layer just below the surface of the earth. If this is possible, and drainage is obstructed resulting in a raised water table, adding gypsum to the area can help.

To monitor the depth of the water table (in areas where it is not far from the surface), dig a hole after the soil has dried to 60 cm or 2ft above to assess the degree of waterlogging. If some areas remain waterlogged for several weeks, we recommend installing drains or removing the water with pumps.

How to manage flood damaged land

  • It is very important not to till wet or very wet soil. Cultivation has the potential to dust the soil, damaging its structure and causing compaction.
  • Once the ground is dry (to field capacity – this can be determined by rolling a ball in your hand, which should just begin to crack behind the ball), it can become difficult. If so, or if a crust has formed, light cultivation may be necessary to break the compaction to allow oxygen and water to penetrate.
  • If it is necessary to replant, it is advisable to apply soil amendments such as organic manure, gypsum or compost beforehand. Spread straw mulch or compost in plant rows to reduce crusting and improve water infiltration, drainage and aeration of the soil profile. Compost, organic manure and organic mulches will promote beneficial root rot antagonistic fungi.
  • Where the soil has been flooded, it is very likely that additional salts have risen and accumulated in the top 20 – 30 cm (1 foot) of your soil. This can be seen through the formation of a white crust on the surface of the soil. If you still have plants growing, they may start to wilt or show signs of leaf burn. This is an indication of high salt levels. One way to overcome this is to apply gypsum (calcium sulfate). It will loosen the soil, improve soil structure, allow more oxygen into the soil and help displace salts. It should be applied at the rate of 50-100 kg/100m2 (4t/acre at the upper rate) depending on the severity of the problem. For best results, work it lightly into the surface of the soil after it dries.
  • The time it takes to take effect will vary depending on the quality of plaster you use. You may need to reapply after 6 months or so.

Weed Control

The number of weeds in your crop will affect its ability to recover from waterlogging.

Weeds compete for water and the small amount of remaining nitrogen and other nutrients, which results in waterlogged areas often being pretty bad. Once the area has dried out a bit, it is important to remove these weeds as they will harbor diseases that affect crops such as tomatoes and potatoes.

If you remove them before they are planted, they can settle on the surface of the soil to break down over a period of time to form mulch. Be careful not to pile them too thick as they will need to use up some nitrogen from the soil in order to break down.

In summaryfacilitating drainage, removing weeds, replacing lost nutrients and using soil amendments will all help to return your soil to a healthy loamy state.
