How to Construct a Soundproof Home Recording Studio
Construction instructions
The best way to set up a practice studio that will allow you to rehearse and record live is to follow the instructions in the free Acoustics 101 booklet that you can download from http://www.auralex.com. You’ll learn that maximum sound insulation for your music studio requires building a “room within a room.”
However, the ideas in this booklet can be used for any type of room soundproofing project because the concept it describes takes advantage of the enclosed air space you will create between your new music studio walls and the old original room walls. . If space allows, you can reduce the noise you’ll make even further by building a separate ceiling for your room within a room, but this isn’t always practical. What will be practical is for you to frame the walls for your new room on the floor and then lift them into position.
Addition of sound insulation material
If you must keep the original ceiling, soundproof with either mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) or a mixture of MLV and closed-cell foam. When you have finished framing the walls and measured the dead air space, you can start soundproofing the new room.
I recommend lining the pockets between the new and old walls with American Matt or a similar closed-cell vinyl nitrile foam, which is usually ¼” thick and will adhere to studs, joists, and interior cavity walls with contact cement You win Don’t fill the cavities with American Mat; you’ll just line them up.
Adding isolation and disconnection
If your room-within-a-room is being built in an unheated garage or basement, you may decide that thermal insulation is a good idea. If so, I suggest you use Roxul, a wonderful thermal rockwool insulation that also has excellent soundproofing properties.
If most of the noise your band makes is low-frequency noise coming from acoustic drums or a bass amp, now you need to disconnect the walls. We’ll discuss decoupling methods in later articles, but if you’re using high-powered amps (4 x 12 fifty-watt amp cabinets, for example) along with an Ampeg bass system and miked acoustic drums, then you can exit without disconnection.
Finishing the home recording studio
If you are not going to disconnect, then get some more high quality MLV and attach it directly to either the joists or studs in your precast walls. Overlap the seams and seal them with OSI acoustical caulk and then tape with heavy duty PVC tape or lead tape.
When you’re done sealing the MLV, put down a final layer of 5/8″ drywall, painting the edges with more acoustical cap. Then tape, mud and paint and you’re done! You have your studio insulation recording at home!
