Called to Be Holy, a Biblical Perspective – A Book Critique
AUTHOR
Dr. John N. Oswalt, a research professor of Old Testament at Wesley Bible Seminary in Mississippi, meeting leader, conference speaker, member of the NIV translation team, and editorial team of New Living Translation presents a well-rounded portrait of the Bible.’ ‘s teaching on the divine life, the result of some forty years of study, teaching, preaching and reflection.
Business
Holiness
summary
Holiness as a unifying theme of the entire Bible is systematically traced. Reading the Old Testament in isolation can lead to the mistaken belief that one is saved through works of obedience, and reading the New Testament without its counterpart can lead one to believe that the only significance of Christ’s death is forgiveness. The text reveals God’s character, the nature of human misery, and God’s purposes for His people. Although the Israelites were immersed in the wrong understanding, God used the monastery because it would be understandable to them. Ultimate reality could only be understood by analogy with the world around us. Four central truths are echoed in both testaments. First, we enter into relationship with God through an act of perfect grace. Second, God brings us into relationship with Himself so that we can have fellowship with Him on the basis of common character. This is evident in the journey of the Israelites. Thirdly, it is again revealed that there is something that keeps us from this fellowship with God. In Genesis, these obstacles are referred to as “evil imagination.” This rabbinic phrase is what prevents God’s children from doing what they are supposed to do in relationships. After all, it is only through the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit that man is able to overcome obstacles. This is the summary of the Bible. It is the same in both wills.
STRONG ADVANTAGES
Oswalt is to be commended for vividly portraying the flaw in the human spirit that is revealed in the prostitution of our best gifts and abilities, echoing that it must be renewed. The Holy Spirit, he rightly notes, must actualize this renewal. The way he finished the first half is also commendable. His summary of seven chapters can be considered a very useful synthesis that maintains a smooth transition to the study of holiness in the New Testament.
weakness
One would have expected Oswalt to have made a very clear distinction between different types of sanctification.
recommendation
The eternal text of Dr. Oswalt is a treasure for any Christian, especially in this age in which streams of controversial ink still flow over the definition and how holiness can be or is achieved.
