Coronavirus COVID-19: What To Make Of It and What To Learn From It

So what is COVID-19 trying to tell us?

  1. Pay attention

No other virus, war, natural disaster or other similar calamity has managed to capture the COLLECTIVE attention in such a powerful way for a very long time. The question of what exactly we should pay attention to is complex (as there are many things we have swept under the carpet). But isn’t it wonderful that we are forced to slow down, stay home, and (hopefully) reflect without distractions on what is important, what is valuable, and what is worth spending our lives on. Of course, if we waste this valuable time looking at cute puppies and posting silly videos on Facebook instead of paying attention to what really matters, we’re seriously missing the point here.

  1. We Are All Connected (aka “A Lesson in Oneness”)

If we ever needed proof that we are all connected and that everything we touch (literally as well as metaphorically) is connected to everything else, now we have it. Finally (and hopefully) a big realization is starting to dawn on us: we can no longer continue to “wish” at one end of the pool (ie the planet) and go swimming at the other end thinking that shit ours will not be caught. with us. We all swim in the same pool and whatever we do in that pool comes back to us. Thus, outsourcing Europe’s “dirty” manufacturing to China (and this is just one of millions of examples of segregation) cannot and does not serve Europe (or any other continent for that matter). Because shit inevitably comes back, as the spread of the virus is clearly illustrating. Incidentally, isn’t it amazing that a situation that calls for social isolation (ie visible separation) actually intensifies the feeling that we are all connected, that we are all in this (and everything else) together!

  1. It’s time for renewal

Old structures must be destroyed so that we can start fresh (hopefully with new awareness, albeit with few resources). On the face of it, it is no coincidence that the virus has so far targeted the lives of mostly elderly people with one, two or more pre-existing conditions, ie people who should have died some time ago if it had not been ‘ t for artificial ways of prolonging life. But artificial life-saving resources are now running out (no ventilators, no medical personnel or other supplies). So this should make us rethink the life-saving technologies that so many people have come to rely on and, as a result, have abdicated personal health responsibilities. What about focusing on disease prevention plans (when the pandemic is over): healthy eating, exercise, meditation, etc.? How many people would have heart disease and diabetes (the two main conditions that go hand in hand with coronavirus deaths) if there were no junk food or modern stress?

  1. Be comfortable with death by making every moment of life count

Death in itself is not a tragedy. Rather, a life lost is a tragedy. A person who has lived with integrity, contributed meaningfully to himself and society, and maintained quality relationships throughout his life, has no regrets. This type of person is ready to die at any time and happily. Be that person yourself. Reevaluate your priorities and start spending time on what matters. Let go of the anger. Begin to feel that you are connected to all other human beings. Excuse me. Feel more love and less resentment. Stop living a tragic life and your death won’t be tragic either. Both can be a celebration.

So these are some of the messages I think we need to hear now. Of course, there are many other things to consider and much more will be revealed to us during this experience. That’s why we need to stay flexible, observe carefully (pay attention), ask smart questions and keep searching for their answers deep inside. This way we are really taking advantage of the situation by clearing our baggage. Any other behavior (eg impatience, frustration, anger, and waiting for this blow-up so that things can go back to “normal”) is immature. We need a shift in consciousness (to displace the virus) and if we resist it, the virus will continue.
