Should hair salons know about first aid? After being asked by Toni and Guy’s Cosmetology School in Orange County to talk to their students about first aid, I realized that there is a serious lack of information out there to address things that can happen in hair salons.
So what are the main types of emergencies that can happen in hair salons?
Here are the top 5 dangers in the salon:
1.) Cutting
2.) Thermal burns
3.) Electrical burns
4.) It falls
5.) Chemical Spills / Inhalation
logging – Stylists use razor sharp scissors and cuts are an option. Did the stylist take a little too much off your ear and make you look like Van Gogh? Better pack some gauze in that first aid kit.
Thermal burns – With straighteners, curlers and ovens in cosmetology schools, thermal burns are most likely. Cold water works best on burns – stay away from ointments, butter, etc.
Electrical burns – Too many devices plugged in can cause fires. Curling iron, straightening iron and blow dryer? All of these draw serious amperage and can overload electrical cables. Remember to keep them away from water as well to prevent electric shock. Make sure your staff knows how to shut off power to your circuit board as well.
flop – The broom is your friend! Keeping your hair up will prevent falls, sprained ankles and broken wrists. The last thing you need is a little old lady taking a head in the salon and having the fire extinguisher.
Chemical Spills and Inhalation – 99% of all salons are well ventilated and it is important that chemicals are kept separate. Bleach and ammonia are poisonous when mixed together. Every salon must have an MSDS (Material Safety and Data Sheets) that lists all chemicals used in the salon and their chemical properties to be OSHA compliant.
