What Is Salvation? – Part 2

What exactly happened when they sinned?

God warned Adam that “…for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Genesis 2:17b). The Hebrew text for “you shall surely die (Muwth Strong’s H04191) (Muwth Strong’s H04191)” reads “you shall die, you shall die.” Two deaths are mentioned here. What exactly do you mean by “die, you shall die”? Just as God is a tripartite being, so we—body, soul, and spirit—are created in His likeness (Genesis 1:26a KJV). So what died first? And what dies second? What remains?

God did not create man as an immortal soul. God breathed into Adam’s nostrils the breath of life, and he became a living soul with a soul:

Genesis 2:7 KJV “7 And the Lord God formed man (Jatsar) of the dust of the ground, and breathed (Nafak) into his nostrils the breath of life (Nashamah), and man became a living soul (Nefesh).

Adam’s spirit did not die when he sinned in the Garden of Eden, as many claim. God’s Word says that it is the soul that dies first when we sin:

Ezek 18:4, 20b KJV “4 Behold, all souls (Nephesh) are mine; as the soul (Nephesh) of the father, so also the soul (Nephesh) of the son is mine: the soul (Nephesh) that sins shall to die… The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.”

Adam’s living spirit did not literally die when he transgressed; became defiled with sin and died “spiritually” when he ate the forbidden fruit. Adam’s soul did not die “spiritually,” but his soul died a “spiritual” death that led to the judgment of sin in the Garden of Eden. This is why Scripture tells us that God made atonement for the soul of man and not for his spirit, because his spirit was not involved in the transgression of the law (Lev 17:11 KJV).

Much of Scripture in the Old and New Testaments reveals that the soul of man did not die when sin first entered mankind through Adam and Eve, but only returned to God after death: Job 27:3 ; Job 33:4; Job 34:14-15; PS 31:5; PS 104:25, 29, 30; PS 146:3-4; Eccl. 3:19-21; Eccl. 12:7; Luke 23:46; Acts 7:59 KJV.

God said, “Dying you shall die.” So what died second? It was the physical body that would die next. God rightly condemned Adam to physical death as a result of breaking the law:

Genesis 3:19 “19 You shall eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are as dust and to dust you shall return.”

Then God expelled them from the Garden of Eden:

Genesis 3:22-23 (KJV) 22 And the Lord God said: Behold, the man is made as one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take from the tree also. of life, eat and live forever. 23 Therefore the Lord God sent him from the garden of Eden to work the land from which they had taken him.

Verse 22 makes it clear to us that God did not create Adam as an immortal being and that the only way to live physically forever was to eat from the Tree of Life, which they did not have. Had they eaten of it after the transgression, they would have been immortal in their sinful state. God is holy and no one who is not holy can live in His presence (Hebrews 12:14b KJV). God said to Moses: “20 … You cannot see my face, for no one will see me and live” (Exodus 33:20 KJV). God in His mercy drove them out of the Garden of Eden to prevent their destruction, until the Blood of Christ could redeem them through the final atonement and make them holy and righteous so that they could live forever in the presence of His.

Adam was still able to communicate with God after he sinned, although he could no longer live in God’s holy presence:

Gen 3:8 KJV “8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day; and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.”

The example of Cain also confirms this, as he too was able to speak with God after killing his brother Abel (Genesis 4:6-16 KJV). God did not stop interacting with fallen humanity. Mankind’s sin separates them from God’s presence until the New Creation.

What did God make the atonement for? It was for Adam’s soul. How did God do this? By sacrificing an animal soul, untainted by sin*, into His creation:

“11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, because it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.” Leviticus 17:11 KJV

God covered their sinful (shameful) flesh (nakedness) with a ‘substituted’ garment of righteousness:

Gen 3:21 21 And the Lord God made tunics of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

The judgment of sin in the Garden of Eden:

It is the soul that dies first when we sin (Ezekiel 18:4, 20). It is the soul that is judged in judgment. It is the soul that needs atonement in order to become righteous. God judged the serpent, Eve, and Adam in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:9-19 KJV). Physical death was pronounced upon mankind (Genesis 3:17-19 KJV):

17 And he said to Adam: “Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, saying: “Do not eat from it; the ground is cursed because of you.” you will eat pain from it all the days of your life; 18 It will also bring you thorns and thistles, and you will eat the grass of the field; 19 you will eat bread in the sweat of your face until you return. to the earth, for from it you were taken; as dust you are, and to dust you shall return”.

God is just and merciful. Adam and Eve were not struck with physical death; they were given a lifespan to live, to be born and to live.

*The commandment was not given to the animals and so they did not break the Law.
