Islam: Religion of Peace and Love?

“Say: We believe in God and in the revelation given to us and to Ibrahim, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the tribes, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and in what was given to them (all) prophets from their Lord. make no distinction between one and the other, and we bow down to God.’ “Chapter 2, verse 136.

Every week, I receive many forwarded e-mails from fellow travelers who are very scared, reading the headlines about Muslim extremists. These extremists are using their religious beliefs to justify deadly actions against others of their faith; and others who have described them as unbelievers or Westerners. In America and around the world, this is a real, growing threat to the way we live and maintain our personal liberties. These Muslim extremists would tell us how to live, what to believe, and kill anyone who deviated from their view.

Sadly remember, this is not the first time that religious belief has been used to justify actions and war against others. History is full of examples and is such a powerful tool and motivator, follow what God wants, that it continues to be used today. Just read the Old Testament or follow the accounts of the crusades; Jewish and Christian history is full of examples where deadly force was used to protect and advance a beloved belief system. Today in this matter, there is little choice; all freedom lovers must stand up, raise our voices and fight back against those who would take us. It is clear that we have solved this problem with words only for a long time.

When I studied the Quran and re-read it many, many times; I found no personal call to spread Islam throughout the unbelieving world. For me, the Qur’an was a timeless revelation, filled with love, hope and the importance of fighting the inner Jihad. The inner being of jihad, perfecting yourself and helping others reach higher. Many people see the historical context and duration of this Revelation; this religion and the last Message was revealed at a time when the Arabs of the desert were just like the extremists of today. Taking, killing innocents and justifying their actions with a philosophy of many Gods that supported their murderous activities. Then comes a Redeemer, Muhammad who spreads the true message of love and surrender; calling all people around the world to change their ways and accept the higher calling. To spread this new way of life, Muhammad takes up arms, defeats his enemies and offers Islam to all people.

In the spread of the new religion, throughout the Qur’an there is advice to leave those people who have accepted God alone and live a good life. Noting that among the Christians and Jews there were those who loved God and they should be left alone. The call to spread the faith – Islam – was for those who disbelieved in this way and profited by hurting others; this was the original target group: the desert Arabs who plundered and killed; getting what they wanted. Some Islamic scholars would argue that the following quote simply means to leave this people alone until God deals with them. However, we would argue the point that God has accepted their faith and they should not be treated as unbelievers.

Those who believe (the Qur’an), those who follow the Jews (scriptures), Sabians and Christians, – those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and do good deeds, there is no fear for them. neither will they grieve. (5:69).

At the heart of every moral lesson is how to improve yourself and become a better person; thereby making the world a little better. From the beginning, there have been those who have used religious belief to kill and take. These people have actually become enemies of their faith, and if the Redeemer were alive today, the Prophet would be the first to call them out.

In this matter, one should keep an open mind. We in the West have long sided with the occupiers in these Middle Eastern countries and helped create some of the extreme poverty and oppression. Over the years, our government has long supported dictators who would take from the people and sell it to the west at a bargain price. Now from the terrorists, we are presented as the enemy and in our destruction, Islam will triumph.

The worst protector is a cruel ruler. Be careful not to become one of them.

— Prophet Muhammad (s) as narrated in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 846.

In dealing with extremists, Israelis have long maintained: an eye for an eye, and there can never be peace with those who wish to destroy them. Also, in maintaining military strength, it minimizes fear and helps ensure survival.

Where do we go from here?

o It is time for moderate Arabs to speak up and condemn the actions of their extremist brothers; Muslim moderates must unite in the fight against those who would harm and destroy in the name of their faith.

o The United States and other nations must help correct the poverty and lack of education that is the breeding ground for this extremist viewpoint. People must have enough food and future; then they can hear reason.

“We believe that poverty does not belong to a civilized human society, it belongs to museums […] A world without poverty may not be perfect, but it would be the best approximation of the ideal.”

— Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Winner.

o All over the world, dictators and governments that will take from the people and spread death and destruction cannot be tolerated. All nations must step up and fight this oppression.

o There must be a worldwide recognition and education that Islam is a religion of peace and love; while calling all men to submit to God, men must remain free to make their own choice. Religion cannot be forced on anyone and people should be free to live their own lives.

Let there be no compulsion in religion. (2:256).

o Every person should be familiar with the teachings of the Koran and other world religions. Discussions should be held publicly where these faiths are examined for their shared beliefs; so we can come together as a family again.

o Clearly there needs to be dialogue about the difference between using a belief system as a cover for harmful activities and what the belief system actually says and claims to do. Religious beliefs do not kill people; people, their personal agendas and guns do the killing. Killing in the name of God is a personal choice that people make.

They are the losers, the ones who make religion difficult and harsh. They put themselves at risk by practicing the harsh practices of Islam. They destroy themselves, those who are extreme.

— Prophet Muhammad (s) as narrated by Ibn Masud in Sahih Muslim
