Can’t Seem to Fit in Your Workouts? Meet Jeanne Stawiecki

In this time of economic uncertainty and job insecurity, it’s more imperative than ever to fit regular, stress-reducing, health-promoting exercise into one’s schedule. Jeanne Stawiecki of Worcester, Massachusetts shows it can be done. In her inspiring story you’ll see how she was able to squeeze a lifetime or more of great excitement and accomplishment — AND EXERCISE — into relatively short periods of time.

Zhana’s story, for us, goes back to 1988, when the then 37-year-old nurse anesthetist with two packages a day worked two jobs just to make ends meet. It was her regular Monday through Friday nursing gig at one hospital and then her weekend evening shifts at another. Jeanne had no interests or hobbies outside of work and apparently little time or energy for them, anyway.

When a chronic cough and hoarseness prompted Jeanne to try to quit smoking—for the seventh time—she didn’t know her life would change so dramatically. Not wanting to gain weight when she quit smoking, she decided to take up running. She immediately crashed when her first attempt to run ended after only half a block, feeling like she had just “coughed up a lung”. So she scaled back her plans and started walking on a treadmill. Gradually she built up her lung power and physical fitness until she was able to run for miles at a time. In the years that followed, Jeanne was able to fit three 4-mile weekday runs and longer weekend runs into her 60-hour work week.

Not only did running help her keep the weight off (now, decades later, she weighs 112 pounds), it also turned her into an athlete. Jeanne ran her FIRST race, in 1994, at the age of 44… the New York City Marathon, no less; her time of 3:36 was good enough to qualify herBoston. In the process, she found that taking on such a lofty goal, running a marathon and qualifying for Boston, was absolutely “intoxicating!” That led to her running the next seven Boston 26-milers (including the 100th anniversary event—one of her goals in the first place).

At the age of 52, Jeanne was ready for a new challenge; so when a co-worker suggested she take up his sport of mountaineering, she jumped at the chance. Despite one small problem, her fear of heights, in a relatively short time she was climbing some of the highest and most challenging mountains in the world. By 2004, it had reached the highest peaks on four of the seven continents.

All, however, was not a success; twice she had to turn back trying to climb Mount Everest. In one of these attempts her vocal cords were so badly damaged that she had to undergo speech therapy sessions to learn to use her throat muscles in a different way so she could breathe again. and speak normally. Despite this setback, when Jeanne discovered in 2006 that she could be the first woman to run a marathon and climb the highest peak on any continent (7x7x7), she was eager to go for it.

With the support and cooperation of her supervisors at work and a flexible work schedule, she was able to design a very ambitious itinerary that would make it possible, if all went as planned, for her to complete the dreaded 7x7x7 — in a action- 8-MONTH PERIOD packed, travel-weary!

To make a long story short, Jeanne successfully completed the challenge right on schedule when, on May 22, 2007 and now 57 years old, she reached the summit of Mount Everest, making her, Jeanne Stawiecki, the oldest woman to have climbed the highest peak in each of them. the continent.

In addition, it established the following MONEY:

  • The fastest total time of the 58 women who have run a marathon on every continent
  • The first woman in the world to complete this terrifying 7x7x7
  • The FIRST American (male or female) to do 7x7x7
  • Shortest time to run seven marathons on seven continents — 141 days

As physically demanding as these challenges were, immediately after completing the 7x7x7, Jeanne emphasized the mental aspects of these achievements by saying the following:

“The way you think makes all the difference in the world. If you think and believe you are a success, you will be.” She also said, “I want people to know that I’m an ordinary person doing something extraordinary.” Almost two years after she said those words, she confirmed to the author that she still stands by those words.

If a nurse anesthetist, Jeanne Stawiecki, could fit substantial exercise into her 60-hour work weeks and climb the three highest mountains and run marathons on seven continents over an 8-month period while maintaining a full-time jobs, then maybe, just maybe, we can hit the gym or get out the door a few times a week for a good workout to reduce our health-damaging stress in these uncertain times.
