Learning to Glean in God’s "Fields" – A Scripture Lady Object Lesson For Kids

Unless your kids live in a farming community, I bet most of them have never heard of the concept of harvesting. Harvesting is really just a fancy term used to gather what is left of a field’s harvest. For example, after a farmer harvests his field of corn, he may allow neighbors or strangers in need to come to his field and collect or collect the ears he has left behind.

Here is an object lesson that will help your children learn about the importance of being good stewards of all that God gives them through “fields” such as prayer and Bible study.

I like to turn my object lessons into something I call 3-Point Sermons for Kids. This lesson focuses on the Scripture passage of Ruth 2:17, which says, “So Ruth gathered ears of corn in the field until evening.” (NIV)

Here’s what you do:

The object you will use for this lesson will be a basket.

When you get to point 3, you might want to have some pictures of different stories or Bible verses that you can put in your basket.

Hold up your basket and ask the following questions to help spark the discussion.

1. What am I wearing? (Expect answers such as “a basket”.)

2. What is a basket for? (Expect answers like “you keep things in it”.)

3. Why would a farmer ever use a basket? (Wait for answers. If they struggle, explain that a farmer can use a basket to collect the food he has grown.)

4. Ask a child to read Ruth 2:17. (I used the NIV version.)

5. Say the following: “This verse tells us that God wants us to become good gatherers like Ruth. Let’s learn 3 important points about this truth.”

Point One

Do you know what it means to “gather ears in the field”? It’s really just a fancy term used to gather what’s left from harvesting a field. For example, after a farmer harvests his field of corn, he may allow neighbors or strangers in need to come to his field and collect or collect the ears he has left behind. The accumulation is done little by little.

Point two

Now let’s imagine God’s field. God has no vegetables in His field. Instead, His field is full of prayers and Bible verses that He wants us to feed on so that our spirits do not grow weary or grow weary. Just as your body needs food, so does your soul. Here are some ways you can go gather ears in God’s field.

Point three

1. Good hoarders collect food bit by bit. Prayer can happen little by little. You may need to pray for some people and situations for a long time. Make sure you don’t give up on prayer. God hears every prayer you pray.

2. Good pickers keep their eyes open in the field. This means that you must pay attention to every Bible verse you read.

3. Good hoarders take whatever they find. This means that you don’t just have to listen to Bible teachings that interest you. You must try and learn to understand the whole Word of God.

4. Good hoarders make sure to keep everything they collect. This means that you must be careful to remember what you learned about God.

5. If you are hungry for God, be a wise hoarder and go learn all you can about Him.

After your lesson is over, you can have the children create a basket out of construction paper and have them fill their baskets with written Bible verses and titles of stories they have heard. You can have them write Ruth 2:17 on their gloves. Have fun!
