Your New Year Goals – 11 Action Steps To Year-Round Success

Like most, when you think about the beginning of this year, I bet you set yourself a lot of goals for the New Year.

Maybe this was the year you finally lost weight and got in shape, started your own business, got promoted at work or met your dream partner.

Well, as this year comes to an end, how did you do?

Have you acted and seen them?

Did you achieve them relatively easily and thus set more challenging goals for yourself?

Or did you just bomb and end up accomplishing nothing or very little of what you thought you could?

If you’re in the latter, then don’t beat yourself up. Recognizing these shortcomings is the first giant step towards creating positive changes in your life.

The problem with setting New Year’s goals is that we always make initial promises to ourselves that things will be different.

We promise ourselves that we will be more focused, disciplined and motivated towards accomplishing our goals, yet within months or even weeks we are repeating the same behaviors that have brought us so much frustration and failure in previous years.

The great Albert Einstein said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

How can you create change in your life and achieve more of your goals if you keep acting and behaving the same way?

Your results will change when you change.

If you really want to accomplish your New Year’s goals, you must and must be willing to take a different and more effective approach.

Throughout the year, we all at some point set ourselves goals, big and small, so we don’t look for the start of the New Year to take off our goal-setting caps and writing boards.

However, a new calendar year has the psychological effect of giving us more focus, motivation; and in a way an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and give us a fresh new start after our failures of the past year.

This attitude is particularly prevalent with ‘serial goal-setting failures’, yet high-achieving individuals never seek new beginnings; they simply build on their past successes, building more and more momentum thus achieving bigger and better results.

So, do you want to break the habit of using the dawn of the New Year as a time to wipe the slate clean and start afresh and instead set yourself new and exciting goals that will see you continually moving forward to experience greater results in your life?

As I mentioned earlier, the reasons why so many of us fail to achieve the New Year’s goals we set is because we follow the same old approach in the form of our behaviors and actions.

This New Year, let’s turn over a new leaf. Let’s begin to apply a new approach that will see you steadily moving forward day after day, month after month, year after year towards the fulfillment of your most cherished goals.

Here are the action steps to achieve your New Year’s goals and produce success in your life:

1) Don’t bite off more than you can chew:

Start small. Choose small goals that you can achieve in a short time. Once you have achieved them, you can then create others for yourself.

Also limit yourself to 3 or 4 goals at a time. More can overwhelm you and also result in losing focus.

2) Write down your goals

Putting your goals down on paper is a great way to stay focused and motivated to achieve them.

Writing them down also gives them more clarity and purpose of what you want to achieve and where you want to go in life.

3) Share it with someone

Revealing your goals to a close friend, family member or mentor will make you more accountable and involved in achieving them.

Telling someone will also motivate you to do whatever it takes to achieve your goal, so you can avoid the embarrassment of admitting to them that you didn’t stick to your plan.

4) Post them.

Put your goals in a place where you will see them regularly, eg. the fridge door, the bathroom mirror or above your computer screen.

Constantly looking at your list of goals will serve to remind you what you have for what you want to achieve and go after.

5) Read them out loud.

Make it a ritual to read your intentions out loud at least once a day. Read them with emotions and feelings and also try to imagine your success to achieve them.

Doing this will keep you motivated and driven again, but it will also serve as a way to instill in your subconscious what you want to achieve in your life.

6) Take action

Each day take inspired action that will ensure you keep moving forward toward your goal. Every step you take will bring you closer to what you seek in life.

7) Review your progress.

Every evening review your goals and ask yourself if you have done everything possible that day to bring you closer to what you want. If you find you haven’t, then make the necessary adjustments the next day to ensure your actions are as productive as possible.

8) Look for an expert

An expert can be a coach, mentor or just a friend who has achieved the goals and successes you are striving for.

Having someone you can call will help you deal with the obstacles, challenges and mental blocks you will often face. They will also keep you focused and motivated on your goals.

9) Affirm your success

Create positive affirmations that you can use to replace the annoying negative self-talk that you often hear in your head.

When you notice a voice in your head questioning or doubting whether you can achieve the goals you are striving for, immediately replace it with a clear positive affirmative statement.

10) Reward yourself.

When you’ve reached a milestone or achieved a particularly defined goal, don’t forget to reward yourself. Be sure to celebrate all your successes, whether big or small. This will make you feel good about yourself and inspire you to keep achieving greater things.

11) Achieve more

Finally, once you have achieved your goals and given yourself a sufficient reward, immediately set new goals and simply repeat the process.

As I mentioned at the top of this article, high achievers build on their past successes so that they can continue to achieve even greater results.

Follow these eleven steps to success and achieving your New Year’s goals and I’m sure you’ll celebrate an approach and formula that will bring you endless results not only for the coming year, but for years to come.
