Apostles Everywhere!

It’s raining apostles!

Yes, they are everywhere!

In Islam, Apostles are the same as prophets, people who were sent or who received a special revelation from God, which is written down and which must be distributed everywhere. Abraham, Moses, Aaron, David, Jesus, Muhammad and some other people we would call prophets are actually in the list of Islamic Apostles.

The Mormon Church has its own “Quorum” of 12 Apostles, a governing body in Mormonism that, next to the Presidency, is looked to for leadership in the same general way that the College of Cardinals in Rome is respected.

And of course there is Rome. Rome believes that its bishops, the governing authorities of that union, are descendants of the Apostles and should govern entire cities of the “faithful”, although such a description is never made of any known Apostle of the Bible. The apostles we know from the study of Scripture were quite temporary and left their “power” to local congregations and ministers. The hierarchy is difficult to trace in the book of Acts and the letters. However, it is easy enough to see in the Roman Empire, which later served as a model for an increasingly power-hungry Church leadership.

No, the followers of the Apostles are not the bishops of the Roman Church. The descendants of Paul and Peter and others are the martyrs of the true church of Jesus Christ over the years.

Where else can we find the Apostles today? In your church or mine? Oh, no, you say. There are no apostles in my church. We know they died out after the first century. Fine, fine. What do you call the guy you send to Africa and the guy in India who is supported by your congregation or faith?

Oh, that. We call these brothers “missionaries”.

Good. What does that mean and where can I find an authorization for that title in the works of the Holy Spirit authors?

Well, a missionary is simply someone who is sent out, sent out to preach the Gospel. I think the word itself is not in the Bible. We just invented it.

Right, and wrong. Right, a missionary is someone who is sent out. Error regarding Bible reference. All you did was change the language. “Missionary” means “sent” from the Latin mitto. And isn’t there a word for “sent” in the New Testament?

Oh. Apostle?

Did you understand. Apostle is the same word as missionary, although it comes from the Greek apostello. So do you have apostles in your church?

Yes, but it is not the same as an apostle of the Bible.

Why?

Well, the apostles of the Bible did miracles, for one. And they had authority over the whole church. They are listed as “first” by Paul. Also, they were all eyewitnesses of Jesus Christ and all personally called by Him, not by the church. Paul was an Apostle, he said, not of men or of man, but of Jesus Christ.

All true, but the term has been around for centuries anyway. Rome claimed it as a way to connect their hierarchy to the days of Acts. Now we also use it to describe people who are sent into the world with the Gospel.

So we are forced to make a distinction. The apostles of Christ were those original brothers of the first century who came directly from God. Apostles of the church, well, that can include a bunch of other people. But let’s make sure we don’t capitalize “a”. And maybe we should use an asterisk, like they do in baseball records.

When someone asks me if there are apostles in the church today, I quickly say yes! Not referring to those “star” brothers (and sisters), but referring to the scriptures given to us by our honest to goodness, Bible qualified brothers (and not sisters). We still have Matthew in the church today. And John. And Paul. And Peter. We also have some men who were very close to these men, knew their lives, watched them serve, depended on their words. Sign. Luke. Judas and James, half brothers of Jesus.

But wait. There’s more. Enter the NAR (New Apostolic Reformation) and many other self-styled apostolic groups who believe they are on a mission from God in our day to restore the New Testament Apostle with all the authority, power of the Spirit, influence that the originals had. This is called muddying the water.

I spent hours listening to these men. Honestly, I respect some of their teachings and honesty. Some of them are truly morally and ethically reprehensible. I have learned not to condemn and judge anyone who could truly be a brother in Jesus. But I’ve also learned to ask each of them the right questions and expect good answers. If good answers don’t come, I move on. In some cases, I share my findings with you. I am currently researching a man who is going strong in this apostolic movement. When the study is finished I will forward it to you so that you can be warned if necessary.

God’s people have been greatly deceived. We are gullible sheep. So easily distracted and away from the truth. I myself have been guilty of following some of the worst. God has had to turn my nose back to the Word a few times. Eat this! He says. This other thing is poison.

Paul spoke of false apostles in his day. Like Paul’s adversaries, they can turn into light today and grab your money and time and walk down the street faster than you can say “I’ve been deceived.”

Men today are often turned into apostles by other people’s suggestions. Twice in one week recently someone told me I had “apostle” or “apostle” in ministry. It sounds so good. So tempting. Some men fall for it and start seeing what others are seeing. Before you know it, everyone is calling that person an apostle. After a while, there is another request for that title. And worse.

The true apostles of the Bible were not created this way. You know the Scriptures. Jesus appeared to them, called them, they accepted. Period. I’m still making room, both in Scripture and today, for the “little” guys, you see. Missionaries. Sent people.

But we don’t need any more authoritarian types to come among us and take over. Which seems to be the agenda for some. A total reorganization of the church, with new “apostles” at the helm.

Have you noticed in Scripture that there is no list of qualifications for an apostle? That is, there is no set of requirements that I would place on the church for anyone who is interested to try, train, etc., as there are for pastors and deacons. Jesus chooses. The trains. sends. The Church must leave if an Apostle of the Biblical type appears. Which makes me realize that maybe there aren’t any of these because, well, because there’s no need for them.

The apostles laid the foundation. The apostles today are really trying to lay down some new ground rules, but the Scriptures have to win. That is, the words of the original Apostles trump the words of those who claim to be “Capital A” Apostles today.

Why else do modern candidates believe they are Apostles and why do so many people “flock” to them?

The answer is of course miracles. Real or otherwise or promised or alleged. Yes, real miracles are out there, I believe it. They come in answer to the prayers of faithful and faith-filled believers. God is no respecter of persons. And often when people go to a meeting expecting Jesus to heal them, He does. Why not? Did God ever tell us that He would not answer prayer when the first century was over?

But if an “apostle” is leading that meeting, guess who gets the credit sometimes? And his star power rises from there. Rome has also been big on this over the years. When a Pope dies, those who want him to be “advanced” posthumously must come up with a miracle he did. Then he can be a so-and-so saint. Just a miracle.

If a believing brother, say it as you like, “a” small or big, prays the prayer of faith and God hears and answers because this is God, suddenly we have in hand an Apostle’s Capital. He may fail in his pleas for hundreds of others, but a miracle gets him into the club.

Where am I going here? Jesus and the Twelve healed all who came to them. It was such an increase in power that it was constantly drawing crowds and putting the Healer in serious trouble.

In America, I’m pretty sure that 100%, and anything close to it, isn’t happening. God heals. But, then, healers are not apostles of the Bible. They must step back and admit that their faith is not like the old people, nor their gifts, nor their duty.

Those who continue to exalt themselves, to give themselves titles, to be honored among men, will one day be humiliated. Those who put aside their ambitious desire for a title and serve humbly like the little child Jesus used as a model will be exalted.

But those seeking the position of Bible Apostle will soon learn that all positions are filled. The foundations of the New Jerusalem have been laid, and the names of no modern apostles are upon those pillars. Get over it, ladies and gentlemen, and join Jesus’ first-rate servants.
