Painting Kitchen Cupboards With Formica Doors
One of the quickest ways to brighten up the most used room in the house is by painting the kitchen area. For years, people who buy and flip houses have remodeled cabinets immediately by applying a new coat of paint to them. When done right, this can be a great way to improve the look of things.
You may want to consider replacing your existing flat doors with raised panel doors. I would recommend that you find a cabinet maker in your area to order them. It would be a good idea to consider putting them in new because there are some tricky things involved in the process.
Necessary tools and materials
– Putty knife
– Throw away clothes
-Industrial airless paint sprayer (obtained from a rental business)
-Paint designed to adhere to Formica surfaces (primer and topcoat)
-220 Gray sandpaper
– Wood filler
– Masking tape
– Paint brush and roller
-Phillips screwdriver
– Too many rags
– Respirator mask with paint
Be sure to set aside plenty of time to complete the project without rushing. The more time you spend in the preparation process – the better your Formica kitchen cabinets will look when you finish painting the cabinets.
Steps for repainting Formica kitchen cabinets and doors
- Place the drop cloths in place. Remove all hardware (handles or knobs) from cabinet doors.
- Remove the cabinet doors. If you have European hinges, you may NOT even need a Phillips screwdriver for this step. Check to see if there is a release tab on the back of the hinge. If so, pull the tab and the hinge should release from the mounting plate.
- Remove the hinges from the doors.
- Clean all surfaces to be painted with a mild soap and water solution. Dry all areas you have washed thoroughly.
- Fill all holes you intend to remove and chipped areas with wood filler. Allow the filler to dry completely before sanding.
- Lightly sand all cabinet door and cabinet surfaces with 220 grit sandpaper to be painted. Wipe all the dust off the cupboards and doors.
- Designate an area where you can spray the primer on the back of the cabinet doors, preferably outdoors. Give them a soft coat of primer.
- While the backs of the doors are drying, apply primer to the Formica cabinets using a roller and brush. When you’re done, the doors should be ready for a second coat of primer.
- Repeat the process of painting the kitchen cabinets and doors with primer until all areas have two coats applied. Once the primer is completely dry, you can lightly spray all areas where needed.
- Paint two coats of finish on cabinets and doors.
- Hang the doors on the cabinets and put the drawers back in their proper places.
- Install old or new handles/knobs on cabinet doors.
It is advisable not to clean the kitchen cabinets for at least four days to allow enough time for the paint to dry completely.
