What Are These Thoughts in My Head and Where Do They Come From?

“I always seem to have these voices in my head. One says I should do this. Another says I should do something else, and then a third voice comes out of nowhere saying I should do something completely different. different. What should I do? I often feel confused and confused. I feel like I’m being pulled in a dozen directions all the time. I feel like I’m going crazy.”

Does this sound familiar? If you’re like the rest of us, you can probably relate to this person’s dilemma. First, it’s good to know you’re not alone. We all hear different and often conflicting voices in our heads.

From my point of view we are multidimensional beings. There are many ways to understand this concept. It’s easier to realize that our 1-year-old self is still alive and well inside of us, as well as our 13-year-old self, our 27-year-old self, and whatever other years you want to put in there. All our parts are present. Those parts haven’t gone anywhere. It is also important to note that we made decisions about ourselves and about life at those different ages. And these decisions are still in effect unless we have consciously gone back and re-educated those parts of ourselves with new updated and mature information.

This is why we often hear different ideas or voices inside our head. Let’s say I’m thinking of doing something like sky diving. My 16 year old says, “Yeah!! That would be great. I want to jump out of a plane and fly!” Then my 33-year-old self says, “I don’t know. It’s too expensive. I need to save some money for a house or something important.” Then my 6 year old comes in and says, “NO! It’s scary! Don’t make me do it!” And then my 42-year-old self starts thinking about what the airspeed would be as I hit the ground, and I wonder if I need to do some exercises or some special stretches so I don’t stir up that old football injury.” How do I make a decision with all these conflicting voices? Shakespeare said, “To thine own self be true.” Great concept, but which “self?” Which voice do I listen to?

The first step is to realize that we have these different voices offering their advice. They are all sharing their truth from their perspective. Everyone wants things done their way. The challenge is to bring this “committee” together in a consensus so that we can make a decision that is for the highest good of all our parts.

One way to do this is to do what I call “dialogue writing”. This involves taking out a piece of paper and a pen, and giving voice to each “self” by writing down their truth, their opinion, their worries, their fears and their ultimate goal. The goal here is to find a way where all of your parts can be heard and fulfill its ultimate purpose.

If we look at the example above, several goals are being mentioned. The 16-year-old wants adventure, the 33-year-old wants to be financially responsible, while the 6-year-old and the 42-year-old want to be safe.

Often, just by taking the time to write down all the different concerns that each part of us has, a solution emerges. In the case of sky diving, three goals are being sought. Is there a way to have an adventure that is affordable while still being safe? Is there a way to create a skydiving experience that accomplishes these three goals?

In order to come to a solution, we may need to bring in another part of ourselves that I call the “neutral observer.” The “neutral observer” is the wisdom within. He knows how to set healthy boundaries. He knows how to communicate and build consensus. It provides protection and education so that the vulnerable child avoids shame and/or pain. And, it can inspire and encourage all parts of us toward our highest purpose or highest good. You may say, “I don’t know if I have a ‘neutral observer’ within me.” I would encourage you to play with this technique a bit and I have a feeling you will find a very wise man deep inside who has been waiting for you to invite him to share his wisdom.
