The Night Shift

The night shift is also the time period of a 24-hour work operation that occurs between sunset and sunrise, and is the crew that works during that time period. Mostly, people fall asleep at night, although many think it is time to seek entertainment and entertainment in many forms. But work patterns are the main driver of people working at night and sleeping during the day.

Night can be a scary time in the natural world. Animals that eat plants often move “under the cover of darkness.” Carnivores mainly hunt pastures at night, and many of them work in a night shift with other carnivorous species so that they do not cross targets while hunting the same patch of land. I was introduced to it years ago when I caught a young raccoon in a live trap. My goal was to catch it and move it away from my vegetable garden. Raccoons are omnivores, which means they can be carnivores when the opportunity arises.

I discovered the captured raccoon just before morning twilight and left it in the trap to show my family when they woke up. Shortly after I left, I heard a strange barking noise from the garden. There was a fox (another carnivore), very angry with the raccoon because it was on the hunting grounds “during fox time”. Raku knew. She twitched her tail nervously and had a look on her face as if the fox was justified in scolding her for the mistake.

The term “night” has synonyms, one of which is “darkness”. Consider that goodness can be expressed as sunshine or “light.” Darkness, therefore, would be the time of evil. Practically, this makes sense, for those who would go abroad to do evil welcome the atmospheric condition of darkness to give them protection (from being seen or caught) as they do evil and escape.

People tend to define evil as something against it want to do, a definition that can put one on the wrong side of the law (rules of conduct in a society) of government and/or the wrong side of God. An evil deed, defined as sin, is human activity that offends or opposes God’s purpose. You may be familiar with the Ten Commandments. As written in Elizabethan English, seven of them begin with “Thou shalt not,” two begin with action verbs, “Remember” and “Honor.” The first commandment is God’s authoritative statement to the Jews. He told them the one thing that will offend him the most.

The Christian Bible is a repository of humanity’s encounters with God. The stories within describe individuals making efforts to contact God, pray, worship, and conduct their lives in a way that pleases God. But they all fall short of what God expects them to be. So he helps them. Throughout the Old Testament of the Bible, you see examples of God teaching, guiding, and helping. But he expects that his effort will bear fruit, that humanity will return to him completely. As time went on, the prophets, the people allowed to have a vision from God, foretold of a great coming, and they advised the Jewish people to prepare for that great thing, a coming Messiah, a Christ.

The New Testament of the Christian Bible is about that prophecy which was fulfilled. Jesus, who called himself the “Son of Man” to draw public attention to the fact that he was born of a human Mother, was also the Son of God. He had to figure it out for himself, and he did it by doing what we all have to do: He prayed. Prayer is communication, and as God decided, he communicated back to Jesus, his Son, through prayer. The communication between God and His Son must have been extraordinary, but they were private conversations and we know next to nothing about them. We know, from the scriptures in the New Testament, that Jesus prayed while in Jewish synagogues and temples. But he prayed often, wherever he was.

The darkness deepened for Jesus as the time drew near for him to be sacrificed for the good of mankind. With little time left to help his disciples understand what he would experience and give them the determination to grow the Christian Church after his death and resurrection, Jesus continued to pray to God. Internet Search Matthew 27:46. The human side of Jesus felt the excruciating pain of human cruelty, beatings, humiliation, and finally, crucifixion. Jesus prayed to God to spare him from the pending sacrifice.

Online Search Luke 22:42. That must have broken God’s heart. How would you feel if your son fearfully asked you to protect him and you didn’t? Jesus did not say that he would not finish his task, but in human form, he cut, bled, and suffered every possible physical and mental injury that any of us can suffer. Of course, he would like to overlook those experiences. In that prayer, he represented all mankind who suffer such things. But, for God, this was the turning point. Already, God had decided that all members of mankind were undeserving of grace. He must have seen that this was the human side of Jesus who begged him for mercy. However, the undeserved sacrifice of Jesus was the means of connecting humanity to God’s mercy.

Online Search Matthew 27: 45-46. Note that the disciple Matthew observed a “darkness that came upon the earth” between noon and three in the afternoon during the crucifixion of Jesus. After suffering terribly on the cross for three hours, Jesus asked God a question. Immediately after that prayer, Jesus’ sacrifice was complete. Read the entire chapter of Matthew to understand that Jesus’ death was not the end of prophecy. His sacrifice began the next steps, Jesus’ defeat of death itself, his resurrection, and God’s hand over all heaven and earth. Eleven of Jesus’ disciples determined to go and tell the wonderful story of God’s gift of his only son. You know the rest. Today, Jesus is not a footnote in history. He is the living God. Today, even those who choose to live their lives only for themselves know that story.
