Duplicate Files, Old Friends

We forget how much crap we store. At least me anyway, but I’m sure I’m not alone. Also, as we grow older, we tend to forget where we put things, only to find them months later. Important things like bank cards and keys, then again trivial things like sweets, oranges and bananas. I’m not that bad, oranges and bananas are usually only there for a few weeks. My computer is a positive treasure trove, a hiding place for all my most useful and most useless information.

Or at least it was until recently. I decided enough is enough. I downloaded one of the new ones duplicate file checker programs I was amazed at the crap that came out of the system. I have turned computer assembling into an art form. A computerized white van could even wipe my hard drive.

As a writer, for starters, I have many different versions of stories, reports, articles, and so on. I’ve never bothered to clean up all the software my daughter has downloaded, mostly games, but I’ve found that kids are just as forgetful as I am. I found more than one copy of some game software. I got rid of both copies most of the time, kids never remember all their games, just think of all the Christmas presents still in their boxes, though it will just be my luck that I got rid of something which she still plays with. I’ll just pretend that the computer did it all by itself, which in a sense it did.

Similarly, I found a lot of MP3 files, mostly of music from the eighties (my era) that it would be criminal to own even one copy, let alone one. Not to mention all the photos I’ve made more than one copy of, for all my various social media pages, my website, and all the writer websites I’m on. I really need to get more organized, but then again, that’s what software is for.

One good thing to come out of cleaning up my system, besides getting my computer back on power, is finding all my old photos, music, and early samples of my writing. It’s like reuniting with old friends. Forget Reunited Friends, nobody uses that anymore (do they?) Download a duplicate file checker and relive all those old memories. Even if you have to do it twice! Better to have lived twice than not to have lived at all (at least I think that was the quote!)
